Miller Elementary School students receive ‘Backpacks On the Go’

The Food Bank’s Backpack Program provides nutritious meals and snacks for children to help carry them through the evenings, weekends, and school vacations when the consistency of their schools’ breakfasts and lunches are not available. Backpacks are filled with food that is shelf-stable, child-friendly, nonperishable and easily consumed.

“’Backpack On The Go’ is a simple, but effective program to make sure that children eat and are nourished at times when they need it most,” said Victor A. Garcia, President & CEO of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.

Not only do Merrillville students benefit from the generosity of donors who support the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, but Merrillville schools are active in collecting groceries to help support the community they serve.

“We really appreciate having this valuable resource right here in the community we serve,” said Merrillville Community School Corporation Superintendent Nick Brown. “Our schools support and our families frequently benefit from the NWI Food Bank. It’s really a great partnership we have going here.”

Wood and Iddings Elementary Schools recently completed drives to benefit the NWI Food Bank, and Miller Elementary School has scheduled its drive during November.
