This past weekend officially marked the 104th annual Lowell Labor Day Parade and Festival. It’s because of countless local businesses in the community that the Lowell Labor Day Parade has become the longest-running Labor Day parade in the state, and their support promises to make this year’s festival another memorable one for the books.
The McColly Real Estate team has been a longtime sponsor of the event. They walk in the parade nearly every year and set up a booth for the festival. They emphasized how important it is for businesses to contribute to local festivities.
“Local businesses are truly the heartbeat of the community, and Lowell does a wonderful job of taking care of its own – we have a Rotary club that is very active and includes many business owners that take part in all kinds of activities. We’re a small town with a small-town feel that has created a huge event that draws in people from all over the place. McColly loves being involved in the community and we’re honored to be a part of the Labor Day festivities,” said Myra Harris, broker associate for McColly Real Estate.
The anticipation surrounding this year’s Labor Day festivities is already quite intense. Regardless of rain or shine, the community was ready to get the weekend started.
“People were putting out chairs last Thursday, and they have even put out tent stands to save their spot. The anticipation and the excitement that come along with the Labor Day parade is just unmatched,” said Harris.
The McColly team was equally excited to get this year’s parade rolling. In years past, the McColly team has made countless memories both incredibly meaningful and silly; they couldn't wait to see what this year had in store.
“One year, one of our realtors walked in the parade twice. She was in the parade right at the start and then she walked all the way back to walk in the parade with us. The amazing thing is that she’s 80! I smile just thinking about it – her enthusiasm for the parade keeps us young at heart,” said Harris.
Lowell’s Labor Day festivities kicked off strong on Saturday, September 2 at the American Legion. The day featured several free magic shows, a kid zone packed full of games and inflatables, countless craft vendors to peruse, a car show, bingo, and, starting at 4 p.m., an incredible lineup of live music.
The festivities started bright and early on Sunday, September 3, with a pancake breakfast. Then, the fun kicked back in strong with another kid zone, a free petting zoo, even more craft vendors, a corn hole tournament, and a kiddie parade at noon at Old Towne Square. It of course wouldn’t be a complete day without another lineup of live entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show starting at dusk at the Old Middle School Grounds on 200 Oakley Avenue.
Last but certainly not least, the parade began at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 4 and was followed by even more live entertainment, countless craft and food vendors, and a kid zone.
More important than all the entertainment and fun, though, is that even a century after its beginning, the Lowell Labor Day Parade continues to bring people of all ages together. For one brief weekend, Lowell is more than just a community – it’s a family.
“I’ve been involved with the parade since I was a kid. I don’t remember a time without having fond memories of either being in the parade or watching the parade. I just want to carry that on for my grandkids in our hometown,” said Harris.
