Indiana faces an urgent crisis: nearly one million Hoosiers, including working families, struggle to put food on the table. Food, Insecure: A Documentary That Hits Home, a powerful new 30-minute film, will be screened on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 12:00 PM at YMCA Camp Triangle Hills & Retreat Center in Crown Point. The event, hosted by the NWI Food Council, CoAction, and Food Bank of NWI, will include a lunch and panel discussion exploring solutions to food insecurity and ways to create lasting change.
As a follow-up to the Emmy-nominated The Working Hungry, which sparked over 65 community screenings and statewide conversations about food insecurity, Food, Insecure delves deeper into the root causes of hunger and highlights the real challenges and stories of Hoosier families. The new documentary pairs compelling personal stories with expert insights to inspire collective action for a more food-secure Indiana.
Distinguished Panel Discussion
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leaders dedicated to addressing food insecurity in Northwest Indiana:
- Jen Trowbridge, President/Chief Executive Officer, CoAction
- Ryan Elinkowski, Chief Executive Officer, Meals on Wheels Northwest Indiana
- Veronica Jalomo, Farm to School Coordinator, NWI Food Council
- Tricia Sheaks, Vice President of Operations and Community Impact, Food Bank of NWI
A History of Impact
The first film in this series, The Working Hungry, brought food insecurity to the forefront in Indiana, revealing the hidden struggles of working families. With over 65 community screenings and conversations across the state, it sparked awareness, policy discussions, and action toward systemic change. Food, Insecure builds on this momentum, providing new data, fresh stories, and a call to action to address the barriers that perpetuate hunger.
Why This Matters
Food insecurity affects Hoosiers of all ages, backgrounds, and geographic areas—undermining health, education, and economic opportunity. Events like this community screening and conversation provide a platform to identify real solutions, connect partners, and inspire action toward a more equitable, food-secure Indiana.
