Everwise Credit Union celebrated its traditional Day of Giving on Monday, October 9

More than 650 Everwise employees spent the day giving back to 45 different non-profit organizations throughout Indiana and southwestern Michigan. Some organizations the company served were the Duneland Family YMCA in Chesterton, Phil’s Friends in Crown Point, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana in Merrillville, and Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso.

Katie Cortes, manager of the Everwise branch in Chesterton, was the team captain for the group that volunteered at the Duneland YMCA. She described how the team collaborated to assist the organization in creating a beautiful atmosphere.

“We’ve been doing a lot of trimming and mulching to help enhance the whole front side of the Duneland YMCA,” Cortes said. “There are three areas with plants and trees by the main entrance they’ve asked us to fix up for them.”

Cortes mentions how important the Day of Giving is for Everwise.

“All of our branches are closed on the Day of Giving,” Cortes said. “That even includes our corporate office and call center. All our employees have dedicated the day to doing what we can to help out other non-profit organizations.”

Karen Montuori, universal banker and loan officer at Everwise, has a great deal of appreciation for this event.

“I always love to help out in the community,” Montuori said. “I think it helps make us stronger when we can all come together and support  organizations like the Duneland YMCA. We get to see a lot of people here. We hope that they notice the work we’re doing and it inspires them to help others as well.”

The corporate-wide day of service first started in 2018. Montuori has had the opportunity to assist non-profit organizations with both indoor and outdoor work.

“This is the fourth year we’ve done this event,” Montuori said. “This time, we’re doing outdoor work. We’ve done some indoor work in previous years, especially on days with bad weather. A couple of years ago, we were helping out by painting.”

Along with the team working at the Duneland YMCA, other employees were doing outdoor work at Opportunity Enterprises. At Phil’s Friends, the focus was to create care packages and write personal notes for cancer patients. The Everwise team at the Northwest Indiana Food Bank helped package and sort boxes of food for the pantry and mobile unit.

The Day of Giving is a huge way that Everwise shows appreciation toward the community. While it might be more emphasized on such a special occasion, Everwise employees are dedicated to making a difference in their communities all year long.

“While we use the Day of Giving to help the community, Everwise is active all year long with assisting others,” Cortes said. “Our employees volunteered more than 6,400 total hours in 2022. That’s just who we are as the Everwise family and we strive to be true to our mission.”

The mission of Everwise Credit Union is all about commitment to the community and putting people first with a focus on making a positive impact.
