For many surgical patients, rehabilitation can be very challenging. Physical therapy in itself can be exhausting and cumbersome even at a comfortable and skilled facility such as Spring Mill Health Campus. Often, access to therapy can be an issue. To help patients achieve maximum post-surgical rehabilitation and activity levels, Spring Mill Health Campus is working with Orthopedic Surgeon and Total Joint Replacement Specialist Dr. Vineet Shah from Methodist Physician Group on a new trial that is already showing promising results.
Many of Dr. Shah’s total hip and knee replacement patients rehabilitate at Spring Mill Health Campus or their sister facilities. To speed along his patients’ recovery, Dr. Shah is leading a clinical trial using a personalized and compact elliptical machine called Cubii™. It is a quiet, portable, safe, and easy-to-use machine, any time and anywhere, while sitting. It is designed and sized to fit under a work desk. Incorporating Cubii™ into the rehabilitation protocol has shown improved recovery process after surgery.
“People are safer and happier at home or at a rehab facility like Spring Hill Health Campus,” Shah said. “Early ambulation and efficient discharge from the hospital help decrease risk of blood clots and hospital-acquired infections,” he said, adding that it is paramount to get patients home or to a rehab facility for best outcomes. “That’s why I thought Cubii™ was a great addition for optimal hip and knee rehabilitation after replacement,” Dr. Shah said.
“With the Cubii™, I’m not getting the same tightness I had in my legs after my first surgery. It helps in keeping them loose, and for me to feel better overall,” said Barbara Dykshorn, a recent total knee replacement patient. “The physical therapy I’ve gotten here at Spring Mill Health Campus along with daily use of the Cubii™ go hand in hand in helping me recover faster and better. I think taking this machine home will help me move along faster. It will let me strengthen my legs while I sit and watch TV!”
The team at Cubii™ leaped at the opportunity to work with Dr. Shah and Spring Mill. While some professionals have used the Cubii™ in rehabs in the past, Dr. Shah’s trial is offering Cubii™ a chance to set a new standard in the healthcare industry. Dr. Shah believes that the “Patient Driven Active Motion (PDAM)” Cubii™ provides will help patients actively engage in their rehabilitation.
The clinical trial at Methodist Hospitals allows patients to participate in the study after giving consent. The study has strict protocols. In this study, physicians, nurses, and physical therapists closely monitor progress and record data. Clinical trials are the gateway to having a product approved for widespread use, and help create standards of care. Dave Wietecha, Director of Sales Healthcare for Cubii™, is excited about the stories like Dykshorn’s, and about Shah’s vision for the product in healthcare rehabilitation.
“We are thrilled to work with him,” Wietecha said. “Dr. Shah has an appetite for new solutions for his patients and enthusiasm for new innovative technology. Dr. Shah believes that the Cubii™ can be used for other patients such as postpartum mothers and even patients who have undergone cardiac bypass surgery. All these patients and similarly other patients can benefit for early safe motion as they recover from their surgery.”
