A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Tim Koedyker

Managing a nonprofit can bring its challenges from developing a plan to having leadership and the drive to stay committed to it. These questions are not to be a point of concern for Alpha Family Resale.

Alpha Family Resale is located at 10763 Randolph St. in Winfield, Indiana. It serves as a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families in need by providing clothing and other household items for affordable costs.

Tim Koedyker has been in the business in Crown Point. His father has experience in this field since 1985. The business was materialized by Koedyker and his wife, who have been married for a little more than a year.

“My wife and I are a way to try to help people in trying to give back to the community here,” Koedyker said. “Her dad always gave back to the community and she saw that my dad was the same way. We ended up finding each other later in life and stuff and our hearts feel the same way.”

Koedyker saw the opportunity that Alpha Family Resale provided the couple with a chance to maintain their integrity, assist the community and experience some benefits for themselves all in one. The couple pondered many different options but decided that the resale store is a great place to start.

The store had a grand opening on June 17. This included a giveaway opportunity for people who signed up to attend on the first day, where the winner received a Visa gift card. The business saw this as an opportunity to give back both to the people in the community that are less fortunate and the people who give back to Alpha Family Resale.

“The people around the community get to play a big part as well,” Koedyker said. “They can get involved in it by donating clothes and other household items, along with online donations, that we can turn around and sell at a very lesser price than what you find in the store, which helps the people that are having problems.”

In the weeks leading up to the grand opening, Koedyker spoke with the town trustee in Winfield to understand what Alpha Family Resale’s place in the community will be.

“We talked about where the need lies, and our plan is to start working on programs in those areas first,” Koedyker said. “My wife and I thought that we could start working with stuff for new mothers and babies, but we got enough room in our hearts to switch up if necessary. We want this thing to be based in Winfield, so we want to do what is best for the people in the area as well”

While Alpha Family Resale is the first nonprofit for this family, their connections remain high with other businesses and nonprofits. The couple is optimistic about the opportunity with a strong belief that they can leave a positive imprint on the people of Winfield. They plan to continuously fine-tune their business as time goes on.
