#1StudentNWI: What’s Happening at South Central High School

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Craft
Without the diverse backgrounds of our teachers, all subjects would be cookie cutter and boring. Mr. Craft makes sure his German classes are anything but boring. Craft switches between South Central and Westville every day.

This former North Judson teacher teaches German to three classes at each school. Craft used to be stationed in Germany, giving him a vast knowledge on all things German. His entertaining stories and insight on the subject makes his classes that much better. Craft loves to travel and loves sharing that with his students. He dreams of traveling the world, but until then, he’s stuck teaching here in Northwest Indiana. In his free time, Craft enjoys long walks on the beach, providing doughnuts to his three favorite students, Blake, Allison, and Madi, and going on beautiful vacations. Craft may be new to South Central, but he is already part of the faculty family and a wonderful person to all students. Although not many students know the German teacher, he will still greet them every morning with a bright, smiling face.

Baseball, basketball, drama club, and Bible Study. This boy does it all! RJ Snyder is a senior at South Central this year, and he has definitely made his mark. RJ can be found spending most of his time working on his baseball skills, being that he wants to continue to do it after high school. RJ also just gained a role in South Central’s production of Footloose for this fall.

Every Wednesday morning, you can find him running the Bible Study group, a club which he founded himself! RJ’s laughter and constant joking makes him a favorite of many and an all around wonderful person to be around. Lastly, RJ just won Homecoming King this past football game against River Forest, and he danced his heart out on Saturday. In the future, RJ wants to attend Belmont and continue to play the game he loves: baseball. Good luck with everything and congrats RJ!

Let’s face it, getting up on stage and talking is hard enough to do. But imagine getting up there, talking, modeling, and being judged all at the same time. Eight girls all just did that very thing, and each and everyone of them did it with the biggest smiles on their faces.

Out of these eight beautiful girls, five of them came from South Central. These five girls were Kristen Mink, Andria Pataky, Sabrina Piotrowski, Melissa Rudolph, and Raeann Grusak. Each girl modeled their hobby wear which could be anything that they wanted. These outfits varied from school sports to 4-H to being an animal lover.

The night everyone was waiting for is now gone and passed, but it still remains as the best week of the school year so far. Homecoming week was full of good thoughts and crazy costumes. The week's themes were new and fun for not only students, but also the teachers and faculty. The themes for the week were Fratboy Monday, Character Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Sports Team Thursday, and the classic, Crazy Red, White, and Blue Day!

Wednesday night was the intense game of junior vs senior Powder Puff football. Many people attended to watch the girls all fight for the winner title. The seniors took the lead right away and showed the juniors no mercy. The seniors won by about 40 points. The class of 2017 is undefeated, because of the tie last year. Great job Seniors!

At the game on Friday, the stands filled up. Families and fans alike invested their undivided attention to the game. At halftime, the Rockettes and marching band both performed. Following the entertainment was the crowning of Homecoming King and Queen. Anticipated whispers filled the crowd as the results were announced. RJ Snyder was crowned as the 2016 King and myself, Madison Wolff, was crowned the 2016 Queen. The football team ended the night with a triumphant win against River Forest. It's safe to say that this year's homecoming was one for the books.

The girls then went up and introduced themselves to the crowd and the judges alike. After a short intermission, the girls returned to the stage to show off their beautiful gowns. The girls had their essays that they written for the pageant read as they owned the stage around them. Each of their girls showed their personality as they got their moment.

Next, the girls were called up in a random order to answer an impromptu question. The contestants all handled it like pros as they gave their most sophisticated and thought out responses. The group then waited on the results and praised each other on their strengths. Then, they all got in a circle and prayed. The sportsmanship between all of the girls was absolutely amazing to see.

In the end, LaCrosse senior Michaelene Bottom won the title of 2016 Scarecrow Queen. SC Sophomore Andria Pataky won the runner-up. Lastly, LaCrosse senior Lillian King won the first ever Miss Congeniality at Scarecrow fest. Congratulations girls! You all looked beautiful and did amazing! South Central is proud of you all.
