Boys’ Basketball Wins Second Straight Sectional Title

It was a finish meant for the story books.

After winning two straight games on their home court to make the sectional final game versus Valparaiso, Crown Point was down by three points with just seconds left and out of timeouts, having to inbound the basketball from the opposite baseline after the Vikings hit a pair of free throws.

That’s when Sasha Stefanovic took the inbound pass, and quickly darted up the court, passing half court, setting his feet best that he could and rising up for the game-tying triple over the outstretched arms of Valpo’s Steve Helm on a hope and a prayer.

In that moment, the gym went silent. Then the shot sank.

It tied the game at 49 and sent the teams into overtime where Crown Point eventually outlasted Valpo to pick up their second-straight sectional title.

Crown Point continued their postseason run at the Michigan City Regionals, beating East Chicago Central 67-52 to set up a spot in the regional final for the second straight year.

Sadly for the Bulldogs, the journey ended with a strong Warsaw team who crushed Crown Point 46-33 in the regional final.

Crown Point finished the season at 13-0 when playing on their home court.

Teacher shoutout: Denise Buck Continues to Teach into Retirement

Even though she retired from being a full-time teacher years ago, Denise Buck continues her service to students through her work as a substitute teacher at CPHS.

Buck worked at Crown Point as an English teacher, and taught for over 20 years before retiring, but continues to serve the community when she can.

“I taught for 29 years in the Crown Point school district,” Buck said. “I taught at Taft for a half a Buck now substitutes in mostly English classes, where she can be a go-to sub to know what is going on in the class, and how to make sure the students remain productive if though their teacher is gone for the day.

Buck said she enjoyed teaching English because she liked the language and her love for literature.

“I guess I enjoy the literature, and I also enjoy the language because I learned English as a second language, and writing was always very intriguing to me, and I always really liked it,” Buck said.

She said she enjoyed teaching at CPHS due to the community and the students.

“I always felt that I had a lot of support from parents, and the administration too. They put a really high premium on good solid education, so I really appreciated that, and I didn’t have many conflicts with the parents as long as you’re fair to the kids. They may not like the outcome but they’re pretty cooperative and understanding on why you have to do the things you do or take the approach you take,” Buck said.

Student Shoutout: Ashley Woods

Freshman Ashley Woods is already standing out at Crown Point High School due to the work she does in varsity sports and in the classroom.

Woods is one of just a handful of freshman students who has lettered in a varsity sport. Woods earned her letter in Gymnastics, and this was her first year participating in the sport at any level.

“(I enjoy in Gymnastics) just getting to meet new people and being part of a team and trying new sports. This is my first year in Gymnastics.”

Woods said it meant a lot to letter in the sport in her first year participating in it.

“It takes a lot of work (to letter) to get onto a Varsity place,” Woods said. Woods said she plans on going to college somewhere in-state, and also plays Golf and looks to be a Cheerleader later on in her school career.
