#1StudentNWI: Lake Station Eagles Fly for Sports

Upcoming Events: Eagles in Snow

The fall sports season came to an exciting end. Now, it is on to the longest season of the year, winter. The men’s high school basketball team is coached by Robert Burke. This team has high hopes for a phenomenal season with the amount of talent and dedication the players possess. Players to watch out for are Jared Jones, Dominque Smith, Angelo Guerra, and Sean Gooch.

Along with that, Lake Station’s wrestling team, which is coached by Dan Mora, is also prepared to have an awe-inspiring season. A couple of wrestlers: Pablo Russi- 12th grade, Andres Russi- 10th grade, Aaron Stewart- 10th grade, Jared Stiles- 10th grade, and Jonathan Hinojosa- 10th grade, are predicted to make it exceedingly far throughout their season this year.

“Wrestling practices are harder than anything I have ever been involved in, but they are also the most rewarding. Also, our coaches care about everyone on the team, and I feel as if they are the best in the conference and possibly the county due to their passion for the sport,” asserted Pablo Russi.

Lake Station has a lot in store for this winter. Come out and support the fighting Eagles.

The Lady Eagles are on the move! The Lady Eagles High School Basketball Team is coached by Kristy Hite. Their slogan for this season is “Equality”. The point of this slogan is to explain that a team needs five players on the court at all times. There is no spot more important than another, and you cannot win without five players.

The ladies are very close, and they are always working to make each other better. Due to that, the team is expected to have a captivating season and a fantastic record. The ladies work extremely hard and have come a long way since their first game. Players to watch out for this season are Taylor Austin, Sade Shumpert, Bridget Collins, and Diamond Nalley. Taylor Austin (Freshman) and Sade Shumpert (Senior) lead in scoring. Bridget Collins (Senior) leads in rebounds, and Diamond Nalley (Senior) is the spirit on the floor with amazing comeback shots. The young team has started off its season vigorously. They are 3-1 as of November 15th.

The Lady Eagles are predicted to make it far throughout their season and in conference. The team is constantly spreading Eagle Pride. Go Eagles!

Success Begins with One Superhero

Teachers are the keystones to the future and they have one of the toughest jobs in the world. To be a teacher, you must have patience, determination, and passion. Charlene Williams is an English teacher who teaches freshmen, sophomores, and seniors at Thomas A. Edison Jr. Sr. High School. Ms. Williams has proven herself time and time again to truly care about her students.

Joncarlo Villasenor disclosed, “Ms. Williams is a very kind-hearted teacher. She works for others, not herself, and she cares a great deal about her students. Also, her teaching method are unique and very effective.”

Ms. Williams is constantly trying to help her students, whether it is in class or to help the seniors get scholarships, attend college visits, or apply to college related subjects. Ms. Williams is very resourceful; she not only teaches from books but also online and through videos.

Along with her varied teaching method, she infuses life, energy, and color into her classroom, shoving aside stereotypes of dull, lifeless classrooms. She keeps her classes upbeat and understands how parts of English can be complicated. Due to that, she teaches a lesson in multiple ways in order to help her students comprehend. Williams does not believe in making it impossible to pass her class, but is sure to provide a challenge for each student. She encourages interpretation and conversation surrounding classroom ideas.

Teachers are the masked superheroes kids hear about. They work to help others and at times, they do more than what is required in their contracts. Ms. Williams is one of those superheros. She is an amazing person and a wonderful teacher. The students of Thomas A. Edison Jr. Sr. High School are lucky to have her.

She is Inspiration

Kaylee Himes is a Junior at Thomas A. Edison Jr. Sr. High School. She has participated in volleyball for one year, basketball for three years, and track for three years. In volleyball, Himes' main positions were setter and blocker. She currently holds the number of 15.

In basketball, Himes is mainly a post player. She holds the number of 21, and in track, she throws shot and discus. During track of 2017, Himes received the title of MVP, most valuable player. Himes is not only an amazing athlete, but also advanced in her fine arts classes. She has been associated with choir from her freshman to sophomore years.

1Student-Lakestation-Nov-2017-03That is not all that Kaylee is advanced in. She is one of the top students in her class. She maintains a place on the honor roll and an overall grade of "A" in most classes. Most of Himes' classes are honors and advanced placement related. She takes AP biology, AP history, and Honors PreCalculus and Trigonometry.

Himes sets very high standards for herself; she also has tremendous goals for herself in the future.

“Kaylee is my inspiration. She always pushes herself to go harder and do more. She is always working, and she always gives over 100 percent,” stated Julie Castillo.

When Himes graduates from high school with an Academic Honors Diploma, she plans attend college. Ever since fourth grade, she has dreamed of attending Valparaiso University. Through Valpo, she hopes to become a pediatrician.

“Kaylee is a caring, loving, and funny person. She is there for you when you are down, and she will always try to pick you back up! I am so happy to have a friend like her,” exclaimed Katrina Abramson.

Himes is extremely caring. She loves working with children and wants to get into the medical field to have the ability to save lives. No matter what she does, she always gives it her all, and that makes her an inspiration.
