What's Happening
Hobart’s Fall Sports are making great comebacks in the start of the 2017 school year.
One of the biggest perks of going back to school for high school students is the kick off of Football Season. This means Friday Night Lights, themes to dress in part with, class cheers and much more.
The first game was held Friday, August 18th at the Brickyard against the Chesterton Trojans. The theme was Beachwear, which meant the entire student section was decked out in their best Hawaiian shirts, sandals, leis, and floaties. The Bricks fought hard but took a loss with this game, luckily to step up their game the next week and beat a hard opponent.
The following Friday, August 25th, The Bricks faced the LaPorte Slicers and took a win with the final score of 34 to 23. The theme for this game was what seemed to be a Brickie favorite: Brickiepalooza. This was meant to mirror the attire worn to music festivals like Lollapolooza and Coachella. Girls showed up in space buns, boho attire, and glitter from head to toe while the boys stuck with muscle tanks, jerseys, and bandanas to fit the theme. The game was close, both sides evenly gaining points until the Brickies took the lead further nearing the last minutes of the fourth quarter. The Brickie Boys are getting back to their win streak, and have a season of big plans and victories ahead of them.
Fullback and Outside linebacker, Chris Tyler, stated “Obviously, we want to do more than we did last season, but bringing back a Sectional Title last year alongside my brothers meant so much. Now all we need to collect more hardware, and I’m confident we can accomplish that this year.”
The Brickies’ biggest victory so far, though, was beating school rivals, the Andrean 59ers. After four years of losing to them, the senior boys faced their first win along with the rest of the team. A final score of 13-10 was achieved in the final seconds of the game, and the crowd went crazy.
Students dressed in the theme of frat boys, as a friendly mockery of Andrean, to keep the student rivalry going. Andrean dressed as construction workers, to “break down the Bricks”, but this theme fell short for them this year.
What's Coming Up
Homecoming is just around the corner, approaching in the first week of October.
The Homecoming game will be October 6th against the Munster Mustangs. The theme of the game is Purple and Gold, and the dance is Luau, as planned by Hobart’s Booster Club.
Some exciting news in regards to the dance for Hobart girls is a change in formal dress code: two piece dresses. Two piece dresses have been making a wave with formal wear among high school girls, and the change in dress code is very exciting to HHS girls.
Along with this, Powder Puff is right around the corner, with the game to kick off on October 2nd. Junior and senior girls will face each other in an intense game of flag football, while their male counterparts will dress up in their finest cheer gear to get loud for their peers.
Student in the Spotlight: Gerardo Lozano
HHS senior, Gerardo Lozano, is the example of a hard-worker and a leader in his school.
From balancing sports, leadership committees, a job, good grades, and then some, Lozano makes Hobart High School a better place. He is a Varsity Swimmer and Golfer, and works at Hobart’s own River Pointe Golf Course when not in school.
“Balancing all my activities made me better at managing my time and learning about how much I could handle” said Lozano. “My biggest challenge was that my SLYCE graduation was at the same time as Hoosier Boys state, so I had to work with the councilors to find a way to leave when we were not supposed to be able to leave. I drove 4 hours from Hoosier Boys state, to come participate in my SLYCE graduation, and returned back to State the same day.”
Lozano was greatly involved in the South Shore Leadership Youth for Community Engagement program, otherwise known as SLYCE. He was the only student selected from Hobart High School to partake in the SLYCE program among various other students from other NWI schools, and he was a perfect fit.
Lozano said “The purpose of SLYCE is to bring together the brightest minds from across the region to learn about the region, refine their leadership skills, and apply what we learn to give back to the community”.
SLYCE targets emerging leaders at the high school level while working getting leaders of all ages to come together and learn about The Region, and develop ways to better it. The students in SLYCE worked together to put on a community event, which was called Colors of the Region. Colors of the Region focused on celebrating the Region’s diversity, with live music, cultural dancing, food and craft vendors and much more. Lozano held a large role in the planning of this event, and was named Chairman of Financing, and also MC’d the event.
Lozano was looked at as a leader within the SLYCE program, and is known as such in his school and community as well. Being involved in Youth and Government, as well as Spanish Club, Lozano is a student who keeps busy.
Teacher Shout Out: Mr. Ramos
Mr. Ramos is Hobart High School’s psychology teacher and a wrestling coach for the Brickies. He is one of Hobart’s most well-liked teachers, and is always there with an open door to help students no matter the situation.
Ramos is a two-time state wrestling champ for Hobart, which he graduated from in 2000. He now teaches at HHS, and leads wrestling in his legacy.
Students look to Ramos as a mentor and role model, and he is always willing to help any student improve themselves and work through tough times. As a coach and a teacher, he is a man of patience and tolerance.
Outside of teaching and coaching, Ramos is an adviser for Hobart’s psychology club and was also one of the main factors in putting together Hobart’s own TedX event. The event pulled together many powerful public speakers to discuss “Generation Z”, or the young generation.
Ramos is an incredible teacher and makes HHS a better place, as many students would agree.
