June 11th, Class of 2017 officially graduated from Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School. With a class of 77 graduates, it is best stated that this class has been one of the most determined and devoted classes that Lake Station’s School System has ever seen.
These students had been waiting for this day since they stepped into school their Senior year. The image of walking across that stage quickly became reality, but it was not the stage that scared them. It was the constant questions about what comes next. Many of the graduates decided to serve the country, go straight to the workforce, or move on to college, not only that, but many of the athletes from Lake Station were signed and accepted to play sports for college.
The Valedictorian for the Class of 2017 was Christopher Caston. The Salutatorian was Alyssa Ellis. The Class President was Robert Ashby. The Class Sponsor was Brittany Ray, and the guest speaker was Bill Ness.
At the ceremony, each speech was wonderfully unique and gave helpful advice in its own way. From the stories in the classroom to advice in the next steps of life, they each had their own way of bringing something to the table. The class was confirmed by Dr. Cripliver, the superintendent, and the choir and band were directed by Julia Brummel. There were many laughs and tears, but the pride shined through that warm, sunny day.
A big thank you to the counselor Mrs. Rose, the many teachers that attended, Mrs. Pepa, Mr. Stills, and the rest of the staff at Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School. The graduation of the Class of 2017 was a success.

Green Thumbs
May 22nd Loretta Sperry, a graduate of Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School, decided to research about composts for one of her last AP Environmental Science projects.
Loretta not only researched composts, she decided to work to create and acquire one for the school. During her time of research, Loretta learned how to make a compost, what can be composted, how to use a compost, and how the school could have use for a compost.
She decided the proper place for a compost would be the school kitchen due to all the leftover food. The compost will be a trash bin with layers of soil and leftover food. The compost is its own system, so it has to be watered, ventilated, and mixed regularly. There are many purposes to have a compost, but the main purposes Loretta thought about a compost is to teach sustainability. Sustainability is the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. Along with sustainability, it teaches teamwork, helps create fine soil for the gardening club, and recycles leftovers. Composts can be quite expensive though. In order to fund this compost, Loretta has started fundraising with the go fund me app on facebook. All in all, the compost would be a great way to help teach and bring many people in the community and school together.
