Westchester Public Library will host Friday Night at the Movies on Friday, January 23, at 6:30 pm. Families are invited to view Mr. Peabody and Sherman at the Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. No registration is necessary. Library films are free of charge and open to the public.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman are back! Mr. Peabody, a talking dog and the smartest being in the world, devoted his life from a pup to science and technological discoveries. One day he finds an orphan and adopts him. He tutors Sherman through a series of time-travel adventures via the WABAC (“way-back”) time machine.

When trouble develops at school, Mr. Peabody and Sherman head to the time machine to undo the damage. Historical figures return to their respective times. Mr. Peabody and Sherman return safely and Sherman returns to school, problems solved.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is rated PG and has a running time of 92 minutes.

Trivia Night at the Museum
If you like trivia, you’ll love the Westchester Township History Museum’s new monthly program. Join your friends at the museum, 700 W. Porter Avenue, Cheserton, for the first Trivia Night on Tuesday, January 27, at 7 pm. No registration is necessary.

Teams of 1-4 people can come to test their knowledge of 1980s cartoons. Vie for the prize: a $20 gift card to Val’s pizza in Chesterton. Refreshments, including treats from Vals, will be served.

Space is limited, so come early!

The Westchester Township History Museum is a free educational and cultural service of Westchester Public Library and is open to the public free of charge Wednesday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. or by appointment. For more information please call the museum at 983-9715.

Free Blood Pressure Screening at Thomas Library
NorthShore Health Center will provide blood pressure screening free to walk-in patrons at Westchester Public Library on Wednesday, January 21. Patrons may come to the Bertha Wood meeting room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, between the hours of 10 am - 1 pm. Blood pressure screenings will be offered each month on the third Wednesday.

In addition to the free blood pressure screenings, interested patrons will receive help calculating their Body Mass Index (BMI).

Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood in the circulatory system, often measured for diagnosis since it is closely related to the force and rate of the heartbeat and diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls.

Battles of the American Civil War
Battles of the American Civil War will take place at Westchester Public Library with a look at the Battle of Manassas/Bull Run. Join Thomas Murphy in the Bertha Wood room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, January 21 with a repeat presentation on Saturday, January 24, from 10 am-noon. There is no registration required; attendance is free of charge.

Enjoy the discussion of the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Brigadier General Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville for the Battle of Manassas. McDowell attacked on July 21. By the end of that day, both sides realized this would not be a short war.

Battles of the American Civil War will continue in February and March with a look at the Battles of Shiloh, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Each program will be presented on a Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm and repeated on the following Saturday from 10 am-noon.

History buff and Civil War enthusiast Thomas Murphy will present each program. Murphy is an RSVP volunteer and has presented a number of programs at the library.

Intro to Facebook Class at Thomas Library
Bits and Bytes will continue at Westchester Public Library with Intro to Facebook. Intro to Facebook will take place in the computer classroom located in the Serials/Automation Department on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, on February 3, from 6-8 pm. The class will be repeated on Thursday, February 5, from 1-3 pm. Registration for both classes will begin January 20.

This beginner level class will cover how to create an account and how to accept and send friend requests. Learn how to post to your wall and how to post photos as well as how to send a private message. The class will also touch on Facebook safety.
