Within the classrooms of Crown Point High School, one educator stands out for her unwavering dedication to cultivating a love for history and critical thinking in her students. Mary Lux, a distinguished history teacher, has become synonymous with excellence in education, leaving an indelible mark on the minds of her students and the broader school community.

“I have always enjoyed working with kids and knew at a young age that I wanted to become a teacher.  My favorite thing about teaching is building connections with my students. I also enjoy teaching about the personal stories connected to a particular historical event along with seeing students who believe they don't like history come to the realization that they may not actually mind history or that they may even like it,” Lux said.

Lux's journey as a history teacher is grounded in a profound passion for the subject. From the earliest stages of her career, she recognized the transformative power of history in shaping perspectives and fostering a deeper understanding of the world. Her commitment to this discipline has become a guiding force in her role as an educator.

“In terms of preparing students for exams and essays, my strategy is to establish as solid of a foundation as possible with the content and the skill we are working on. We do this through a variety of methods of teaching new content, review and skill building. If students have confidence in the content, they will experience more success in crafting a historical argument and defending that argument, both of which are fundamental skills in A.P. U.S. History,” Lux said.

Central to Lux's teaching philosophy fosters critical thinking skills. She challenges her students to question, analyze, and interpret historical events beyond the surface level for a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in the study of history.

Lux's impact extends beyond the classroom; she instills a love for lifelong learning. Her contagious enthusiasm for history inspires students to explore the subject beyond the confines of the school day, fostering a curiosity that extends to their personal and academic pursuits.

Lux stands as a beacon of inspiration within the halls of Crown Point High School. Her passion for history, engaging teaching methods, commitment to fostering critical thinking, and personal connection with students have collectively contributed to a legacy of educational excellence. As she continues to illuminate minds and shape futures, Lux remains a driving force in the world of education, leaving an enduring impact on the students fortunate enough to be part of her classroom.

Jordyn Gates, a shining example of this versatility, seamlessly juggles her passion for track and field with a vital role as a manager of the Girls Basketball team. Her commitment to both pursuits exemplifies the spirit of leadership, teamwork, and dedication within the student body.

On the track and field team, Gates is not just an individual performer; she is a team player. Whether sprinting down the track or participating in relay events, her collaborative spirit and encouragement of teammates contribute to the overall success and camaraderie of the team.

Her commitment to the basketball program extends the values of teamwork and dedication from the track to the basketball court.
