Coming up on March 7 through the 10th is Lowell High School's production of “Bye Bye Birdie”.
The role of Conrad Birdie is being played by Junior, Blake Devalk. Conrad Birdie is a character based off of Elvis Presley. Conrad is the biggest heart-throb around and isn’t afraid to show off when he performs. His confidence exudes in both his attitude and in his hips.
It isn’t always easy to get into the role of a character with such a bold personality. Blake explained he’s been studying how Elvis acts and moves on stage, to better emulate him. He’s also been attempting to channel his inner arrogance so he can portray that to the audience.
“I’m looking forward to being able to tell a story to the audience. Especially for people who haven’t seen the show before, we get a chance to hear their genuine reactions to the ups and downs of the story, and that’s really cool.” Blake explained when asked what he’s looking forward to with the shows.
You have a chance to check out Blake take his role of Conrad Birdie on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 7 pm, or on Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are $7 for students and seniors and $9 for adults.
Staff Spotlight:
Mr. Mclindon is a social studies teacher at Lowell High School, but his role in the school doesn’t stop there. He is also in charge of the Red Devil Peer Mentor program, and the coach of the Varsity Softball Team. He’s an essential part of the LHS community and known for being very caring for all students.
Mr. Mclindon has been teaching for 14 years and coaching for 13 years. As of right now, he’s pursuing his Master’s Degree, not only for himself but for his students. Having his Master’s Degree will qualify him to teach dual credit political science. This means that his students will have the opportunity to take a college-level course while in high school, receive college credits through Indiana University, and save money while doing so.
Mclindon has also established himself as a successful Varsity Coach. “Interacting with the players and learning their unique personalities is one of my favorite parts of coaching. I also enjoy the competition, the challenge, and watching my athletes grow and learn,” said Mclindon when asked about his favorite parts of coaching.
As for the upcoming softball season, Mclindon is predicting that their biggest strengths will be returning all of our varsity pitching, leadership, and overall great energy and work ethic. Tryouts end on March 6th, and the school is excited to see how their season will unfold!
What’s Going On:
The Boy’s Basketball team completed their season, after a hard-fought loss in the Sectional Championship game. They drew the bye for the first round of the tournament. In the second round, they ended up playing the East Chicago Cardinals. They ended up capturing a win, 55-50 after a neck and neck game. They advanced to the championship game against Munster, where they fell short 56-33.
Lowell High School inducted alumni Michael D Pickett into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He graduated in 1995 after being an extremely successful football player who went on to play at Ball State University.
Lowell’s National Honor Society inducted their newest members on February 20th. The group will continue to plan their upcoming Cancer Walk.
The Boy’s Swim team made history in multiple elements throughout their post-season. The Boy’s Swim team placed 4th out of 17 teams at the Sectional Swim Meet. They finished with a total of 208 points, which is the highest point total and placement in team history. Out of the 28 swims in the competition, 26 of them were personal records. Senior Chris Breault competed at the Regional Dive Competition on February 19th. He received a 9th place finish, which is the highest ranking in the Lowell Boy’s Swim Team history.
Madison Cunningham and Serina Bachman placed second in the Mission Possible Event at the Regional Science Olympiad Competition at Purdue.
What’s Coming Up:
After months of working on segments, on March 11, members of the Red Devil Network will attend the Indiana Association of Student Broadcasters State Conference at The University of Indianapolis. At this conference, they will find out if any of the segments they submitted placed in the competition.
March 12 is the 5th annual Special Olympics Basketball Game that Lowell hosts. Lowell takes on Crown Point starting at 6:30 in The Pit. This year’s theme is Blending Together as One. The L-Club has put a lot of planning towards this night, and hopes to see a big crowd attend the event!
After last year’s absence, the annual dodgeball tournament is returning this year on March 12! Teams of 5 compete against each other to receive the ultimate title of Dodgeball Champion. Additionally, there is no entry fee for teams this year. On March 20, Lowell High School is hosting their Winter Awards Ceremony. This ceremony recaps the achievements of the Winter Sports and is when the athletes will receive their awards.
Spring Break will be kicked off on March 25, and will last until March 29th!
