Hobart Educator to Be Honored With Green Apple Award

Hobart-Educator-to-Be-Honored-With-Green-Apple-Award-2017School City of Hobart, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Debbie Matthys will be honored with the Green Apple Award for excellence in environmental education at Dunes Learning Canter’s annual gala, “In Our Hands: A Dunes Affair,” at Sand Creek Country Club on Friday, September 8th.

Matthys, a former science teacher, is passionate about providing students with opportunities to learn through diverse experiences. In partnership with Dunes Learning Center, Hobart students of all ages have helped conserve and restore natural areas, visited Chellberg Farm, and paddled a 24’ canoe while learning about their local waterways. “There’s nothing like seeing that joy in the students’ faces, when they’re ready to explore. That’s what we want! We want people to be excited about learning.” says Matthys.

The Green Apple Award was conceived by Dunes Learning Center co-founder, Lee Botts, as a way to honor the educators who go out of their way to provide students with opportunities to learn from, and be inspired by, the unique natural and cultural resources of the region.

“More than 2,000 Hobart students will get a chance to experience nature with one of Dunes Learning Center’s educators this year, thanks to Debbie Matthys,” says event chair Chris Hoham. “That’s an accomplishment worth celebrating.”

A keynote address by education advocate and children’s champion Jo Ann Engquist, will precede the award presentation. A cocktail reception, live music by Rocco Labriola, and a silent auction featuring hand-made items and hands-on adventures will also be featured. Tickets are $100, with proceeds benefitting students participating in Dunes Learning Center programs. Details and tickets online at duneslearningcenter.org/events
