Munster Horsepower Robotics Team #3147 has spent the last few weeks competing in their 8th season of FIRST FRC competition. As of March 19, 2017 Munster Horsepower is sitting at the #2 position in the state of Indiana. Behind 1st place team #1501 T.H.R.U.S.T. from Huntington, IN by only 5 district points. The students, and mentors, have been very focused this year on proper preparation and planning. The team’s performance at the St. Joseph District in Mishawaka was an exemplary performance highlighting both skill and strategy.
With one district competition remaining for the 2017 season MHS is looking forward to a position in the State Championship to take place April 6, 7, and 8 in Huntington, IN. The winning alliance (3 teams) from the state championship will qualify for the World Finals in St. Louis, MO on April 26 – 29. The team has been lucky to attend the world championships in the past and they are cautiously optimistic that this year will take them back.
This season has been a season of growth and refocusing the team on where they would like their future to take them. With the support and encouragement of the School Town of Munster, the High School team has re-launched the Middle School Lego League team this year. This opportunity has given the high school students experience as mentors and leaders while the middle school students are expanding their knowledge of STEM and having fun with Legos in the process. In the longer term plan they would like to see the middle school team progress into a FIRST Tech Challenge team and push the Lego League (FLL) group into the Elementary schools.
The Munster High School team is coached by MHS math teacher, Lyndee Govert.
