The application for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECS) for Lake County opened July 15. The 2017 Lake County Lilly Endowment Community Scholars will be named early in December 2016. Previous scholarship recipients were identified in April of the year they graduated from high school. The change affects the program for all Indiana community foundations.
The Lilly Scholarship awards six students from Lake County four years of paid tuition to any public or private college or university in Indiana, plus a yearly stipend for books and required equipment.
The advanced timeline is the result of a statewide evaluation of the program conducted by Lilly Endowment in 2015. During the evaluation process, a number of community foundations suggested that identifying Lilly Scholars earlier in the school year would give more time for the students to decide which college or university to attend.
Legacy Foundation is adjusting its timeline for selecting students. Students must submit their online application by September 9. The Foundation’s volunteer Scholarship Committee members will meet for student interviews in mid-October.
Students can access the LECS application through the Legacy Foundation website: legacyfdn.org/scholarships. Questions regarding the Lilly Scholarship for Lake County can be directed to Legacy Foundation Scholarship Administrator, Jodi Kateiva, at jkateiva@legacyfdn.org.
