#1StudentNWI: Standing Against Bullying at Hammond High School

Student Spotlight
Estefania Gallarzo, number 3 in the call of 2016 is a student that sheds brightness and smiles through the hallways of HHS, anyone could see she is a ray of sunshine and is as wise as they come. Her intelligence and demeanor are influential. She is a great role model to generations that set to come, and a leaving impact on the academics of HHS. I was lucky enough to chat and shed someone brightness of my own as she does for HHS.

I spoke with her about HHS and what her education means to her, Gallarzo said, “It means everything. There is nothing I take more seriously. I believe that an education is fruitful, bearing gifts, unlike any other thing. It changes lives. I know that being educated is imperative for my future success in life. “

Education is a motivation for her in her journey to success, but she also spoke on the what it has been like to be taught by the staff of HHS.

“I am extremely fortunate to have such extraordinary teachers. The teachers at HHS are unlike any others. They see potential in every student and genuinely want the best for them. Some teachers stay long hours after school to make sure that their students understand what was covered in class. Time is precious, and these teachers have lives of their own, but they are willing to sacrifice some of their time because they know that it will benefit their students. The teachers inspire me to do better and reach goals I never thought possible, and for that, I am forever grateful,” said Gallarzo.

With great students, there are amazing teachers right behind them who encourage them to stay straightforward in the path to success, This will be Gallarzo's last year at HHS, she mentioned what it means to her to have attended HHS.

”Attending HHS means that I am entering an environment where I can learn, get help from amazing teachers, and have a great time with my peers,” she said.

She will be sure to leave her ever lasting mark on HHS, but HHS has left her with some memorizing memories thus far.

”My favorite memory of HHS would probably be my junior prom. I got to spend time with my friends that were graduating and had an awesome day overall.”

Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Stephanie Moran is the chair of the Social Studies Department and a TAP mentor teacher. A very dedicated teacher, she decided her sophomore year of college in which she attended Purdue Calumet that she wanted to go into teaching, she says she was lucky enough to have “some amazing” professors that contributed to expanding her own thinking, outlook, social, and political issues that affect not only America but other countries as well.

As for more expansion, she says, “They helped me see that issues that plague our society also affect others because we are all connected. We live in a global society and what we do in our own society has an impact on other countries and vice versa.”

When choosing a profession one sets goals for themselves as Moran has done, her goal as teacher “is to help my students see the interconnection between all of us and look at us all and a global society rather than an independent country."

This year has made her sixth year teaching at HHS, as a prior student of hers I am proud to say that I will leave off for college this year and will be able to say she has taught me. Her energy is flawless and her teaching environment is comfortable, she has found her calling and I hope she continues to spread her intelligence to many more students in generations to come.

What's Happening
The month of October for HHS was filled with information since bully awareness is taken very seriously as part of the “Wildcat Way”, Sgt. Jones and JROTC helped welcome the H.E.A.R Program and all they had to offer, each grade was met in the auditorium with a hands-on discussion of bullying and how to put an end to it.

Some Wildcats teachers and staff wore their “Wildcats Against Bullying” t-shirts as a way to say they too are joining the alliance. Not only have the Wildcats informed themselves in bullying, but many colleges and speakers have stopped in to give information for students with mostly Juniors and Seniors about ways to pay for college and what resources are present to them.

Sgt. Elcanah Bellande came to AP Biology class taught by Mr. Lazaroff and gave them tips and what to do to reach scholarships and much more!
