It’s no secret that this match-up raises up tension on both sidelines, and for as long as the community can remember, Crown Point and Lake Central have been rivals with tonight being no different occasion.

“A lot of our guys know each other, and they grew up playing alongside one another. When you have this type of history, it’s a unique situation, and there’s a lot of emotion that plays into games like this. Sometimes you make mistakes because of it, and sometimes you make good plays because of it,” said Crown Point head coach Kevin Enright.

Each respective student section showed up in mass to support their team, Lake central decked out in Red, White, and Blue in honor of 9/11, and Crown Point sporting a classic red-out. Endless chanting and callouts were spit across the turf all night long.

“Everyone is so hype leading up to this game every year. I didn’t even try to keep a level-head going into tonight’s game, I fed off the energy because it actually helps my game,” said Nick Cicero, Crown Point High School guard.

Rivalry aside, each team had a job to do. Crown Point took the lead with a field kick late in the first quarter and held Lake Central 3-0 until late in the fourth.

Just when Lake Central began to build their momentum and managed to push Crown Point defense inside of their own 10-yard line, Crown Point running back Mathew Walters exploded through the middle and never looked back until he intruded Lake Central’s endzone for a 99-yard touchdown run.

With a standing score of 10-0 Bulldogs, the Lake Central defensive line did their best to hold the Crown Point and strip the ball but fell short.

“We were as prepared as we could be tonight. We had one play that was a bad breaker, but those things happen, and we will have to move forward from there,” said Patrick Winters, Lake Central defensive coordinator.

For Lake Central, it’s back to the drawing board.

“At the end of the day, we didn’t make the plays to take us over the top and win. It’s time to go back to work. Win or lose, it’s on to the next, and that’s the attitude we have every week,” said Lake Central head coach Tony Bartolomeo.

As for Crown Point, celebration is to be had, but the work for next week begins tomorrow morning.

“We need to get out of our own way and fix us,” said Crown Point head coach Kevin Enright. “If we can fix and focus on us, we’ll be alright.”

The game will feature one team from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), and one from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in a showdown at the Brickyard called America’s Crossroads Bowl.

This year’s postseason matchup will serve as a memorable experience for players, coaches, families, and fans.

“The state has had Super Bowls, NCAA conference championships, Big Ten championships, but they’ve never had a college football bowl game,” said John Lynk, Manager of Sports Development for the South Shore CVA. “I’m thrilled. I can’t believe that we actually have the opportunity to bring this game to Northwest Indiana, let alone the very first one in the state.”

Lynk’s predecessor, Rick Flutka (who is retiring) kick-started everything when he stopped by the GLVC’s headquarters while on a trip to Indianapolis. He spoke with their commissioner, kicked around some ideas, and eventually, America’s Crossroads Bowl took shape. When it came time to choose a host city to represent the Region, Hobart emerged as the top choice.

“We picked Hobart since they have such a rich football tradition,” Lynk said. “Hobart’s coach Osika is a former football player, both in college and the NFL. Now, he’s back home leading his old high school. It’s just such a cool set-up and I couldn’t be more excited.”

Hobart Mayor Brian Snedecor is eager for the chance to show off his community on a big stage. He echoed Lynk’s comments.

“I think what put us over the top was our long history of football and the legend of the Brickie Bowl,” Snedecor said. “I think all of those things played a part in them saying ‘this is the place we need to have it.’ I’m looking forward to those teams coming in and being a part of the community while they’re here.”

The teams are planning to get out and engage with the community in a number of ways, from visiting local destinations such as the County Line Orchard, to taking part in Hobart’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony the night before the game.

“We want to make this a great experience for the football players and the people of Northwest Indiana,” Lynk said. “We’re going to get high schools and Pop Warner teams involved. Also, since it’ll be the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, we’re in talks about a scholarship essay contest where students can share what they know and feel about that day.”

There are also pre-game and half-time festivities in the works that will honor all branches of the Armed Forces, as well as first responders. Profits made through merchandise sales will be donated to the Multi-Agency Academic Cooperative, who develop and maintain training opportunities for firefighters, police officers, and EMS.

America’s Crossroads Bowl will kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 at Hobart High School’s Brickyard Stadium. To learn more, visit americascrossroadsbowl.com. For information about sponsorship opportunities, contact John Lynk at 219-989-7770.

Crown Point defense pulls out a win over Chesterton Trojans https://nwi.life/article/crown-point-defense-pulls-out-a-win-over-chesterton-trojans/ Wed, 11 Sep 2019 03:32:31 +0000 Tommy Elwood https://nwi.life/article/crown-point-defense-pulls-out-a-win-over-chesterton-trojans/ Two of the best teams in the Region battled it out on the soccer field on Tuesday night. The Crown Point Bulldogs and the Chesterton Trojans gave the fans an exciting, hard-fought game with the Bulldogs coming out on top 2-0.

Goals shot into the net late into the first half and right into the second half. The Bulldogs defense is what mainly helped them edge out the tough Trojan offense. Madi Dross, Crown Point goalie, stopped a penalty kick late in the game to help cap off the shutout against one of Region’s best.

The game was competitive and exciting with both teams playing with their pride on the line at Crown Point High School. Crown Point Coach Christopher Mikrut credits the team’s defense and ability to respond to plays.

“I’m very proud of these girls because, for some of them, it is their first time on the varsity team. They were kids on JV for two years who waited their turn to be varsity,” said Mikrut. “I think the key to today’s game was the defense. The back four were incredible, all of them played great. Our center-mid did a phenomenal job of slowing them down and keeping them in front of us.”

“Madi Dross is having her best season yet. She’s changed things this year. For three years she has been flip-flopping with other keepers, and this year we wanted her to take over this role and she did,” added Mikrut

Madi Dross played perfect in goal but received a yellow card late in the game for a delay of game, calling on backup Grace Mumbaugh to defend a tough penalty kick for the Trojans. Mumbaugh stopped the goal and finished out the rest of the game to help Dross and the Bulldogs complete the shutout.

“Coach Dave and I were watching film before the game on PKs because we thought the score would go 0-0 and we would have to go to PKs. I just followed by instinct today and knew what to do,” said Dross. “Our defense never gives up and they save my butt all the time and they did it again today.”

The Chesterton Trojans played a hard game but were shut down by the Bulldogs’ strong defensive effort. They are still among the top programs in the Region and look to continue their strong season against Lowell at home on the 12th.

The Bulldogs of Crown Point plan to continue their dominance against the top team in the state on the 14thwhen they travel to Hamilton Southeastern.

The Lady Vikings fought valiantly against the Bulldogs in an all-out war on the court. But the out-of-bounds lines proved to be a terrible foe as the Vikings fell 0-3 against the raging Bulldogs.

The Valpo ladies came in having gathered a few more losses than they would have hoped thus far in the season. Head Coach, Katie Lenard, was hoping to lead the team to a big victory against Crown Point to give her team a little bit of momentum going into the rest of the season.

“We’ve been working on our communication more than we have before,” said Lenard. “Crown Point is always a good team, and this game is something we always look forward to because it’s a good measuring stick for us.”

Valpo senior captain, Grace Healy, wants to keep the team positive above all else. She knows it’s important not to let the losses get the team down and to focus on keeping the energy up and encouraging the entire team

“It’s definitely going to be a good game, we’re all really hyped to play some good competition, and we just need to play our best,” said Healy. “I think we’re coming up and doing better with every game so hopefully we can do even better tonight.”

For Crown Point, the team is looking at keeping their streak going. With no tough losses behind them or injuries taking out key players, the team is healthy and confident and looking to keep their competitive edge. Head Coach, Alison Duncan, is thankful her team has been healthy this season because she knows that could change at any moment.

“We just need to focus more on ball control and really take control on our side of the court,” said Duncan. “This game is always competitive and intense, so it’s a match that we look forward to all season.”

Crown Point senior captain, Olivia Panepinto, is hoping to keep the team working to improve so that they can be completely solid by post-season play. As a captain, she knows communication and encouragement are key to keeping the team playing together like a family.

“We’ve been practicing for a while for competitive games like these so we’re really ready to come out and rock it,” said Panepinto. “We’re still building and working on our offense so that’s going to be a really big factor.”

Crown Point came into the first set strong defeating Valpo quickly 25-16. But Valpo wasn’t going to go down easily and fought with everything they had in them. The next two sets could have gone either way as the teams were tied neck and neck. Valpo fought back a 10 point deficit in the second set but Crown Point prevailed 25-22. Valpo came back strong taking an instant 5 point lead in the third set, but Crown Point kept their rhythm going and came back to win 25-19. Both teams fought hard and should be proud of how they played tonight.
