Shopping News Feed - NWILife Sat, 22 Feb 2020 11:30:05 +0000 en hourly 1 At Harley-Davidson, you’re family, especially when you work there Mon, 10 Feb 2020 23:47:21 +0000 Julia Demma When you become a staff member at a Harley-Davidson dealer, you’re joining more than a new place of work –you’re joining a family of bikers across the country.

Working at Harley involves living out your passions, building bonds with customers and co-workers, and having fun in the process.

“It’s a fun business. Everything we do at Harley is fun, from the motorcycles to the clothing, and the opportunity to work with and get to know Harley’s customer base. They are so passionate about the brand and that’s contagious,” said Jeff Haggerty, General Manager at Harley-Davidson of Michigan City and Valparaiso.

Ginger Misch, one of Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso’s most beloved employees, has been working at the store for 21 years, and she still remembers the first time she walked through the company’s doors.

“I walked into what would quickly become a little family,” Misch said. “I come to work every day excited to see returning faces and meet new customers. Harley-Davidson has the most unique customer base you’ll ever come across. They are extremely charitable, helpful, and passionate. People will come into the store just to say hello because they haven’t seen me in a while.”

David Brumley, Sales Associate at Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso, took the position almost 15 years ago not knowing it would shape his life in a way he never expected.

“There are so many people out there who physically have the Harley-Davidson symbol tattooed on their bodies. Being part of a company that so many people feel so strongly about is pretty cool,” he said.

Brumley enjoys the family-oriented values that Harley-Davidson exudes.

“It definitely has that family-feel. I’m close with everyone here—we’re just about as close as it gets to a family,” he said. “I never pictured myself being in one place for 15 years, but I’m glad that has been my reality. Every day I kind of feel like I’ve found my home,” Brumley said.

Expertise runs deep in the culture of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers Thu, 30 Jan 2020 17:09:12 +0000 Kole Rushmore They speak more than 14 languages under one roof. They have more than 20 certified gemologists on staff. “Friends first” is ingrained in their culture. And it’s safe to say that none of their expertise is by accident. Albert’s Diamond Jewelers is a tri-state go-to for when you want the most experienced professionals helping you with the most meaningful – and major – purchases in life.

“We like to say on your visit, ‘You’re going to work with a team of experts,’ and I think we’re a team of experts,” said Kerry Phillips, Chief Operating Officer at Albert’s Diamond Jewelers. “For us, it’s generational. We see great, great grandfathers, great grandfathers, grandfathers, sons, and their children–we see all the generations here because we’ve built those relationships.”

Over the company’s more than 100 years of serving Northwest Indiana, Albert’s has grown from a tiny storefront in East Chicago to one of the largest and most successful jewelry destination stores in the country. In doing so, Albert’s has staffed its stores with only the best and most experienced team members, including more than 20 certified gemologists who are dedicated to providing a personalized buying or selling experience.

“We have some of the best gemologists and appraisers in the country right here at Albert’s Diamond Jewelers,” Phillips said. “We speak 14 different languages under the roof. If you want someone like yourself, they’re here–we likely have someone in the building that can help you make that connection literally and culturally, so you’ll feel welcome and comfortable when you come to Albert’s.”

While being an authorized retailer to brands such as Cartier, TAG Heuer, IWC, David Yurman, and Roberto Coin, Albert’s sets itself apart in other ways, too.

“A store doesn’t carry these types of brands by accident,” Phillips said. “You don’t choose to carry them, they choose you. It’s been a nice marriage between these internationally-famous brands, and Northwest Indiana, but the one thing that makes this place special is the culture. It’s family-owned, it’s a family atmosphere.”

When you shop there, you become a part of their family. On the off chance you’re left unsatisfied, the Albert’s team will make it right.

“Josh and his dad [Fred] are almost always in the store, and if not, there’s always senior managers or a decision-maker in the building,” Phillips said. “We don’t want to sell you something once, we want you to be a customer forever, and I think Fred says it best: ‘If we ever disappoint you or failed to leave you enthusiastically satisfied, just whisper in my ear and I’ll fix it’.”

The thinking runs deep within the Albert’s culture.

“What’s interesting about this place is what I call Rockstar Treatment. Our culture is what we call friends first. We want to be your friend first and know how you got here. Who sent you here? How did you hear about us? The exciting thing for us is that we have something for everybody. We didn’t start that way, but that’s how we ended up. We want everyone to be treated like a rockstar. Whether you’re spending $9 or $900,000, we want you treated beautifully,” Phillips said.

Albert’s is a full-service jewelry store, with jewelry and watch repair professionals on-site. Along with offering some of the world’s most exclusive and renowned designers, the diamond jewelers can fix almost anything.

“We have master craftsman with 30 to 40 years of experience, and we have a perfect marriage between old-world craftsmanship and new world technology. We have guys that can make jewelry as it’s been made for more than 100 years, and they can also implement advances in technology. The combination of the two is amazing,” he said.

Even if it’s your first time making a major purchase, Albert’s can help.

“Young people are really our life’s blood,” Phillips said. “We have a credit vehicle that is our own. We’re their bank, so we can start young people with their class ring, or first promise ring. We’re able to help them start their credit journey. Through the years, that’s how we’ve built those relationships.”

Consider these unconventional options for shopping local thanks to Opportunity Enterprises Fri, 20 Dec 2019 01:17:20 +0000 Stacey Kellogg If you’re a fan of shopping local, here are a couple of unique options that you might not have considered around the holidays. And some are even made right here in Valparaiso.

Let’s start with that cluttered home office.  If you want to tidy that up before guests arrive for the holidays and flutter through each room of your home, Secure Shred at Opportunity Enterprises is happy to take those confidential, sensitive, or simply paper-laden products off your hands at an exceptionally affordable price. More affordable than you might think.

Through December, Secure Shred is offering 50 percent off personal drop-off shredding. But don’t let the impression of an expensive concierge service fool you. The special means they’ll shred your documents, CDs, and cassette tapes for a mere 8 cents per pound.

“If you think about a typical copy paper box, maybe about ¾ full, that would be about $3.50,” said Becky Jascoviak, Marketing & Communications Specialist at Opportunity Enterprises. “Most people don’t realize that even at full price, it’s exceptionally affordable.”

Joe Hogan, Director of Business Services at Opportunity Enterprises, said personal drop-offs of any size are accepted, and you don’t even have to remove staples or paper clips. The staff at Secure Shred does all the sorting. Just load up your car and visit the Secure Shred division at Opportunity Enterprises Headquarters at 2801 Evans Ave., Valparaiso. Use door number 7, and when you pull up, the helpful OE staff will assist you with unloading your car. The service accepts personal drop-offs from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The service is closed on Dec. 24 and 25, and the sale ends Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m.

If you don’t need to shred anything this holiday season, you might need that perfect stocking stuffer, Hanukkah gift, present for a beloved teacher, or office treat, and the new arrivals at the Simply Amazing Market might be just what you need. Plus, they’re all made right here in Valparaiso.

We’re talking towers of popcorn in traditional and exotic flavors, like honey mustard, buffalo, jalapeño, and kickin’ caramel. Buckets of unique candies dusted with sugar and swirled in chocolate. And hand-painted ceramics by Opportunity Enterprises artists.

Jennifer Fine, Retail and Art Director at OE, said staff have been as busy as elves trying to keep the market shelves stocked with the more popular introductions this year, such as truffles, sugar plums, and symbolic Christmas coal (that’s really just candy).

“One of the most popular things we offer are custom-made baskets and gift sets of just about any size,” Fine said. “We can take any item in the market and create a basket on site while you shop.”

Along with the new fancy arrivals are the traditional go-to favorites like chocolate covered pretzels, gummies, chocolate covered nuts and raisins, cake pops, and more.

Hand-painted ceramic items that are as functional as they are beautiful are signed by the OE artists on the bottom, and include ring and jewelry holders, tree ornaments, knitting bowls, business card holders, vases, and other glazed treasures.

Check out the story here:

Casino games, whiskey, and steak – what more could a man need? For more than 15 years Albert’s Diamond Jewelers has been throwing parties to celebrate their customers and connect them to the best possible jewelry-buying experiences. For this particular event, men, armed with the wish lists received from their significant others, enjoyed savory tastings of Italian beef and steak from Buona Beef and Second City Prime, while the open bar poured free drinks and top-shelf whiskey tastings for the casino-themed night.

It’s no secret that Albert’s never stops looking for ways to set themselves apart from the rest of the jewelry industry.

“We’re all about having fun and we’re all about giving back to the community and this is just one of the small things that we do to entertain our guests and let people in to have a little fun,” said Josh Halpern, President and Co-Owner of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers. “We’re different than your traditional jewelry store, and we want to have fun with our guests, and for people to enjoy the shopping experience here.”

For the casino night, attendees played games with $1,000 worth of “fun money” chips for the opportunity to win prizes as they shopped. Owner Fred Halpern said he loves his business, but most of all loves his customers and wants nothing more than to make them happy and feel appreciated.

“I love to throw parties, it’s our way of thanking all of our customers, and look at them all, they’re happy and eating and drinking!” Halpern said. “I don’t want my customers to go anywhere else. My idea of doing business is layers of love, as many layers of love as I can put out. If you come in you don’t have to spend a nickel. I’m going to offer you food and drink and anything I can think of that is free to make you happy.”

Top jewelry brand Pandora was the main special of the night with other smaller specials going on throughout the store. Prizes like Albert’s gift cards and select jewelry were a part of the drawings and the men could get more tickets by donating to a local charity. Chief Operating Officer Kerry Phillips, has been with Albert’s for 8 1/2 years and has loved every second of it.

“Traditionally, the first Thursday of the month we have a ladies night and the ladies come in and whisper in Santa’s ear what they would like, and then the men come through and sometimes magic happens on Christmas Day,” Phillips said. “Some of the men have been coming to this since it started, so we get to see our friends, and our biggest compliment is that friends are bringing friends. Fred says, ‘There’s no place like this place, so this must be the place to be.’”

Attendee Brian McMahon has been a customer of Albert’s since the early ‘90s. After getting an invitation to the casino themed men’s night in the mail, McMahon decided to bring along friend, Mike Pucci, and check it out for the first time.

“I wanted to see what it was like and so far so good. I’ve been enjoying it and having a good time,” McMahon said. “The beer and food are good, the casino theme and the whole ambiance make it a great experience and I definitely feel appreciated.”

Check out the story here:

Ladies’ Night has been a tradition for Albert’s Diamond Jewelers for the last 17 years. Tasty treats, hors d’oeuvres, massages, live music, and unlimited wine and mimosas, all free of charge, are a simple way for Albert’s to say thank you to their valued customers. The first 100 women in the door received a goody bag full of makeup, ornaments, and other fun trinkets, causing many to line up hours before the event began.

With Men’s Night coming next Thursday, women were encouraged to make a wish list for their man to review while enjoying the festivities. Owner of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, Fred Halpern, loves nothing more than giving back to the community, and what better way than to throw a party.

“The truth is, they come to have a good time and it’s our way of saying thank you to these ladies for being our customers and we just wanted to throw a party for them,” Halpern said. “I started out with nothing and now we have this, so this is my way to say thank you to everybody and show it.”

It’s no secret that Albert’s is highly involved in the community. As the number-one fundraiser for MS in the United States, raising over $300,000 every year, Albert’s mission is to give back more than they receive. President of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, and Fred Halpern’s son, Joshua Halpern, has been working with his dad his entire life and is always looking for more ways to get involved.

“I love dealing with and meeting new people and helping them find wonderful gifts for either themselves or a loved one,” Halpern said. “Giving back is in our DNA and our mission statement is that we exist to serve others. There are so many causes and people who need things. It’s just the right thing to do, to be generous to other people.”

Approximately 300 to 400 women were expected to roll through the store over the course of the evening. Raffles, prizes, and deals were given out and if a new toy was brought for Halpern’s children’s toy drive, women were given extra raffle tickets. Marketing Coordinator, Christine Martinez, wanted to thank Last Chance Overstock, Kali Beauty, Royal Brush, and Vision Boutique for donating items for the gift bags.

“Working here just makes you want to become a better person and give and do more as well. I love that we do so much for the community, especially for MS. Everything we do we try to do for a charity, so it’s refreshing to be a part of a company that cares,” Martinez said. “We do a lot of planning for this, so it’s nice to see it all come together.”

One attendee, Lou Gamuttilo, has been coming to Ladies’ Night every year since the event began. She isn’t one to come hours early to wait in line, but she will come one hour early to get herself a goody bag.

“It’s fun seeing all the people and I just love it,” Gamuttilo said. “You get to talk to people you don’t know and it’s awesome. It’s a great party for the ladies and for everyone to get together.”
