Merrillville Football Official William Morrison to be Honored at State Finals

merrillville-pirates-logoWilliam Morrison is the recipient of the 2014 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of football. Morrison will be honored in a special ceremony at next weekend’s state finals.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in 11 sports during the school year.

William has been a football official for 38 years. During his career he has worked every level of the state tournament, including 28 sectionals, 10 regionals, six semi-states and two state finals. In addition to being a football official, he is also licensed in both baseball and basketball.

Morrison was selected for this honor by a committee representing the officials associations. In Indiana there are 24 associations made up of men and women who assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student-athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.

A member of the Calumet Officials Association, William has served as a local rules interpreter and clinician from 2006-2011. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Calumet Officials Association since 2011, and also served in the same capacity from 1997-99.

Morrison, a 1971 graduate of Lew Wallace High School in Gary, works for the NWI Times newspaper in Munster, and currently resides in Merrillville, IN.
