United Way To Help Disburse $348,000 In Federal Funds To Local Programs Emergency food and housing programs will receive “game changing funds”
The United Way of Northwest Indiana (UWNWI) announced it will administer more than $348,000 from the Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) to support local food pantries, homeless shelters and organizations that provide basic needs services.
The funds will not be available to individuals.
The award was made by the EFSP National Board, which is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. The EFSP National Board consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities and United Way of America.
A local board will determine which nonprofit agencies receive awards The can have a significant impact on their operations.
“For a number of local organizations, this federal award means they’ll get game-changing funds they can use to help more people,” said Adam O’Dougherty, President/CEO of the UWNWI. “This fits perfectly with helping thousands of Region resident meet immediate needs, which is one of the four goals in our strategic plan, ‘Harness The Power of Caring’.”
A local board will determine how the awarded funds will distributed. Organizations meeting the following requirements are encouraged to apply.
- Serve in Jasper, Lake, Porter or Starke counties or the city of Gary.
- Be a private nonprofit with a voluntary board or unit of government.
- Demonstrate capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.
- Be eligible to receive federal funds and have a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) number.
- Have an accounting system and does not discriminate in their service to the community.
