Munster High School Art Department Happenings for January & February 2017

By: Munster High School Last Updated: February 20, 2017

munster-hs-outsideThe second semester in the Munster High School Art Department is dedicated to scholarship opportunities, portfolio documentation and refinement and multiple exhibitions for the advanced classes.

On January 21, 2017 Mrs. Lopez delivered three winning works, all by AP Studio Senior Mei Brasel, to the South Bend Museum of Art for the 2017 Scholastics Art and Writing Awards Regional Exhibition. Mei was awarded two Honorable Mentions in Painting for Seeking Knowledge, and Reminiscing, both pieces are Oil on Canvas. Miss Brasel was also selected for the prestigious Gold Key Award in Drawing, for I Had Surgery While Hypnotized by a Witch Doctor; making her an automatic National qualifier for the New York awards. Top National Award Medals will be honored through an Exhibition in NY this June.

Munster has been twice previously recognized Nationally, one Silver Medal in 2012 by Ivan Gutierrez in Drawing, and one Gold Medal in 2009 by Lana Ngyuen in painting, whose work was displayed for several months in SoHo and was since granted to Munster HS’s permanent collection. The 2017 Regional Awards are being presented on February 5th in South Bend. Look for updated results on Mei’s bid to Nationals later this semester!

Thursday, January 26th, they installed the Munster High School 18-piece entry into the South Suburban College Regional High School Exhibition. Mrs. Elena Lopez has been involved with this, serving as Co-Chair representing Indiana schools in this exciting event, for eleven years. The Exhibition is now open to the public and culminates on the Awards day, February 24, 2017, where the students are invited to participate in the College’s Drawing and Ceramics studios, Digital Media Design/Computer Imaging Lab, view the Painting studios and the current College student works, watch a Bronze Pour in the Sculpture Studio, see a PowerPoint Presentation of all of the Regional exhibitors and more.

Some highlights include the guest speaker’s Inspiring presentation by Jay Strommen, a contemporary Professional working artist; as well as the presentation of the regional Awards. This year also marks the concurrent Third Biennial High School Faculty Exhibition, featuring a large oil painting, entitled, Keeping My Head, by Elena Lopez.

***Special thanks to Mei Brasel, Samantha Chua, Ashley McPartlan, Chloe Moffett & Amanda Reyes for assisting in the School’s Installation of works.

The Art Department students are currently completing 25 “Tiffany Boxes” inspired by Fine Artists, Fashion Design, Music, and TV/Film in the era of 1992 - 2017, representing the 25th Anniversary for the Tri Kappa chapter. This project involves all levels of Painting Students, and functions as a competition developed by the Epsilon Omicron Munster/Highland Tri Kappa Chapter, for their annual Fashion Show fund raiser to support Fine Arts in school. Last year, an AP Senior from Munster, Shannon Chopin won the top prize, and we are hoping to repeat that success.
