Are you an artist searching for an opportunity to gain some new skills? Are you an art newbie who is hoping to pick up a new hobby? Or are you a parent looking for a fun activity to keep the kids engaged? No matter who you are or what your goals are, South Shore Arts Center has you covered this fall with its wide variety of art workshops and courses.
South Shore Arts has been offering art instruction to both kids and adults in the Northwest Indiana community for over 50 years. During that time, South Shore Arts has developed a wide selection of classes for people of all skill levels whether they’ve been creating art their entire lives or barely know how to properly hold a pencil.
South Shore Arts offers many different art camps for kids. At the “Make Your Own Bobblehead” camp on October 4 and 6, kids will be able to create their own clay bobbleheads. On October 11 and 13, kids can attend the “Magic Arts, Tricking the Eye” camp and learn everything there is to know about optical illusions. Lastly, on October 18 and 20, kids can have fun thinking about their futures and design vision boards at the “Keep Kids Creative” camp. Each camp is $60 to attend and is a great way to get the kids involved in a day of fun.
If you’re looking for a bit of a longer commitment for your kids, children can also register for nine-week classes. There are classes for every age group. For the littles, activities range from creating baking soda volcanoes, to learning about different art forms, to even getting to learn the basics of ceramics and making their own simple 3D shapes. For teens, the activities are a bit more intense—they can learn how to design their own Manga comics and use the pottery wheel to fashion their own pots. No matter how big or little, there’s a class for your child to enjoy.
South Shore Arts has many options for adults as well. There will be three workshops that adults can attend. The “Pottery Wheel 101: Let’s Make a Bowl!” workshop will be a three-part workshop on September 10, 17, and 24. In this workshop, students will learn the step-by-step process of how to make a pot on the pottery wheel. On September 10, adults can also attend the “Art for the Soul: Acrylic Painting and College” workshop, and unlock the wilder side of their creativity through painting. The last workshop adults can attend will be the “Art for the Soul: Air Dry Keepsakes” workshop, in which students will make their own mini-keepsake pots that can hold anything from plants to jewelry. All of these workshops offer a fun way to indulge in your creative side for a short afternoon.
Adults can also register for nine-week art classes if they’re looking for a more committed experience. Class prices range from $150 to $220. There will be painting, drawing, and ceramics classes offered for all levels of expertise. There will also be darkroom photography classes, in which students will get to improve their photography skills and develop their own black and white negatives. No matter which class you choose, you will be given the opportunity to learn new skills and improve on old ones.
Don’t want to attend an art class in person? Don’t worry—South Shore Arts is also offering a couple of online classes. Adults can take a digital illustration class or a digital typography class. Both classes will teach people how to use Procreate, a powerful, digital art studio that artists can use anywhere. It’s a great opportunity for adults who want to practice mess-free art in the comfort of their homes.
Classes are being offered in both Hammond and Munster and will be taught by many different instructors. All of the instructors are either professional artists or have studied art professionally. Each instructor has their own unique skills and talents to share, so no matter who you have as a teacher they are sure to give you a special learning experience.
Registration for this fall’s classes began on August 15, but there is still plenty of time to sign up for one of these engaging and fun opportunities; South Shore Arts suggests that you sign up at least a week before the class start date. With so many different options to choose from, you’re definitely not going to want to miss out on all the amazing things that South Shore Arts Center has in store.
