What's Recently Happened?
The new year has started, as well as the second semester at East Chicago Central High School (ECCHS).
Everyone had to start on virtual learning coming back from winter break, but that was not stopping ECCHS. On January 12, everyone was able to be back in-person in the building safe and better than ever. The school is happy to have students back in action and in the classroom.
This is a very exciting thing for ECCHS, and now the entire school is striving to have a great start to the new year. While preparing for the fast-coming end of the school year, staying encouraged during this time is crucial.
Other than that, the school is hoping that everyone will strive and do the best they can to stay safe during these times and that other events can hopefully be hosted in future months to come.
What’s Coming Up?
As the second semester starts this month, everyone is trying to get back on track.
Coming up on January 13, the mobile market will be at ECCHS from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This will be a time for families to come out and get some food at the school from this mobile market. On January 17, there will be no school because of Martin Luther King Jr. day.
To all the seniors that are preparing for early graduation, the deadline to order the graduation announcements will be January 31. Senior pictures were also supposed to be taken this month but keep those smiles ready because they will be done on February 17.
Staff Spotlight
Many say Katrina Alexander is one of the most amazing teachers here at ECCHS. She teaches Radio/TV 1 and 2, photography, and graphic design, all very interesting classes to take as a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway.
Some qualities in a teacher that students usually say they like are when teachers are great listeners, motivators, supporters, how they are accepting, and so much more. These are just a few to name, but these are all the qualities that Alexander has in her as a teacher, and so many appreciate her for it.
If you were to ask some of her students how they felt about Alexander, they would say that she has helped them in many ways. Whether she has given students advice on life, encouraged them to keep going even when they feel like they don’t want to, Alexander has done it, and she continues to do it out of love for all of her kids in the classroom.
The number one reason why she is so encouraged to teach and help change all of these students' lives, is because one day she had a student say to her “If my mom doesn't care, then why do you?" Alexander recently was selected and won Northwest Indiana's up and coming influential women of the year for education.
Alexander has done so many things in her teaching career, for her students, and for many others.
Student Spotlight
Dante Silva is a senior at ECCHS. One great thing that a lot of teachers would say he does around the school is help out a lot. He is the type to help someone out whenever they need assistance for something, or if it is just something simple that a teacher needs someone to do.
A couple of things that he has done through the school was helping out with a few blood drive events that have happened here at ECCHS. Dante has also given food to little kids who have needed it.
Silva is a very involved student at ECCHS. Some of the extra-curricular activities that you would find him in are wrestling and student government. He is also a member of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS).
Along with making all of his teachers proud, Silva is one student that is making the most out of his high school career and is getting ready to graduate in these last months as a senior at ECCHS.
