Event Information
The Northwest Indiana Coalition for Public Education (NWICPE) and Purdue University Northwest (PNW) will co-host a panel discussion entitled “Education and Race: Barriers to Learning for Students of Color” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 25. This will be the first in a two-part virtual series exploring education and race.
The virtual discussion is free and open to the public. It will be hosted via the PNW YouTube channel and live-streamed on NWICPE’s Facebook page.
The discussion will be moderated by Tony Lux, retired Merrillville Community Schools superintendent and board member for both the Indiana Coalition for Public Education (ICPE) and the Northwest Indiana Coalition for Public Education (NWICPE).
“We have an amazing group of presenters that will provide a comprehensive overview of the multi-faceted complexities that are inherent to understanding the challenges faced by educators to overcome the barriers to learning for students of color,” Lux said. “These programs should appeal not only to educators and stakeholders in education, but to parents and the general public as well.”
Some of the items set to be discussed include factors both inside and outside the school, relationship barriers, availability versus accessibility, school policies, regulations and curriculum, as well as inequitable school funding. A question and answer session will follow the discussion
