GARY, IN – Since the age of 10, Miller resident Martha “Marty” Bohn has been fascinated with the art and science of photography. Seventy-five of her photographs from Nepal, India, Cuba, and Morocco will be on display at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts in the Miller Beach section of Gary from Sept. 6 – Oct. 6.

“When traveling, I attempt to revere locations with a unique perspective and to photograph significant moments,” Bohn explained. “I find that the best way to travel is to meet locals, converse with them, and then attempt to capture their persona”.

Having taken photographs in more than 80 countries over 7 continents, Bohn speaks from experience. “Definitive Moments” is the name of her exhibit, which features an Artist Opening Reception on Friday, Sept. 6 from 6-9 p.m. Larry Lapidus, Curator of the show, will also interview Marty at the gallery on Sunday Sept. 29 at 2pm.

A Professor Emerita of Northwestern University, Bohn was Director of the Neurobiology Program at Lurie Children’s Memorial Research Center before retirement. It was there that she managed a research program focused on developing new gene therapies for Parkinson’s disease.

“Photography has always been a part of my life, and I have loved learning new technologies, using photography in my science career and, more recently, capturing my natural environment and people in everyday life,” she said. “I love generating photos with unique colors and light.”

While photography in foreign countries is the focus of this exhibit, Bohn is quick to point out that there’s a treasure trove of photo ops in her own backyard.

“I live in Miller, a small beach town in the Indiana Dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan,” she said. “We’re surrounded by a national park, prairies, and incredible biodiversity. This area provides a wealth of beautiful landscapes, sunsets, and water scenes, and is the focus of the majority of my photographs when I’m home.”

“Definitive Moments” will be on display from Friday, September 6 – Sunday, October 6 at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts, 540 S. Lake St., Gary, IN. An Opening Reception will take place Friday, September 6 from 6-9 p.m. and a discussion with the artist at 2pm on September 29. A cash bar will be available at the Opening Reception. Gallery hours are Thursdays 12-6pm, Fridays 12-9pm, Saturdays 6-9pm and Sundays 1-4pm. Exhibit is free and open to the public. Curated by Larry Lapidus.
