Event Information
This week, Legacy Foundation will explore Ava DuVernay’s film, 13th, which takes a look at the impact of the 13th amendment on the current state of incarceration and criminalization. The Foundation’s discussion is part of a program called Conscious Conversations, a monthly virtual meet-up with community members who want to explore issues of race, equity, and inclusion through books and films.
“There is power in stories,” said Erica Fizer, Legacy Foundation’s director of marketing and communications. “They can help us understand ourselves and the world around us. Our hope is that these stories will provide context and understanding around some of the inequities that exist in our communities today,” said Fizer.
Legacy Foundation will host three conversations that are open to the public. They take place on the following dates and times.
- Tuesday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. CST
- Wednesday, February 24 at 5:30 p.m. CST
- Thursday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. CST

Any member of the public can participate in hosting or joining a Conscious Conversation. The last week of each month, Legacy Foundation staff will host virtual conversations. These conversations are open to all, but registrations will be limited to ensure all participants have an active voice during the discussion. Interested community members can host their own conversations with friends and family. Legacy Foundation will provide access to the selected book or film as needed.
Legacy Foundation has a limited number of each of the pre-selected books available to borrow. If you or a member of your conversation needs a copy, please email Maranda Fishback at mfishback@legacyfdn.org with your requested number of books. These books will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Conscious Conversations is a program of Legacy Foundation, the community foundation for Lake County, Indiana. This program is generously supported by grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Indiana Humanities. Learn more at https://legacyfdn.org/community-programs/conscious-conversations/.
