Hebron unveils new mural

Event Information

5:10am - 5:10am

The town of Hebron invites the public to join in on the unveiling of its new mural and signage on October 26th at 10AM at the northeast corner of Main and Sigler. From 10AM to 12PM, everyone is invited to see the new installations. As well as the mural, there will be live music, face painting, food and beverages, and the Stagecoach Museum will be open for tours. Retired Hebron High School art teacher Karen Jania, along with Hebron students, alumni, and community members, have spent over 1,000 hours creating this beautiful piece of art that highlights Hebron’s past, present, and future. On the mural, Jania says, “We narrowed down what we felt was the most important aspects of the three murals; for the Past - the Pony Express, the Railroad Station, the Stagecoach Inn, the Grand Kankakee Marsh (which started everything!), and the concept of Indian Town (the name originally given to the area), and the Potawatomi Hauakiki village, the Heritage Inn--originally called the Pratt House--that supplied housing to trappers, traders, and hunters.”
In looking at the future, Hebron students saw a vision for their town that puts Hebron first. While they desire to keep the small-town feel of Hebron, students also see a need for growth in Hebron. According to Jania, “students applied their understanding of public education funding in Indiana and realized the need for light industry and businesses that contribute to the tax base would be important for vitality of not only the town for the school system. In their opinion, the school system IS the town and if that were to be lost, the impact on the town would be disastrous.” Hebron graduate Grant Giacomin put in many hours this summer on the mural and shared that he “is proud to have come from a small town with community values at the center of town.” Of the mural itself, he speaks to the future of Hebron. “We chose to highlight the bike path as a dream that would bring people to our town. After we finished painting it, we were beyond thrilled to hear that funds were secured to connect the bike path to Crown Point and part of our vision had come true. I hope to someday see the rest come to life, too,” Giacomin stated.
