Yost Students Jump for Healthy Hearts

Yost-Students-Jump-for-Healthy-Hearts-01Newton Yost Elementary students got a good workout while raising money for a great cause. Students participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart event during the month of February.

“Our students really put all of their effort into this event,” said Tana Bamber, physical education teacher at Yost. “They did an excellent job and had fun learning about the benefits of physical fitness while jumping rope. Apart from the health benefits, students also gained knowledge in community service by raising money for heart disease research and education.”

This was Bamber’s first time running a Jump event and it was the most successful fundraising year Yost has ever had. “Yost raised $12,789 which is incredible. I am so proud of all of our students for being heart heroes,” she said.

Jump Rope for Heart is a national program sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Through the event, students learn that fighting heart disease starts as children through a balanced diet and physical activity. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the No.1 killer in America, with over 460,000 people dying from heart attacks or complications per year.
