As the days of winter are approaching, it’s important to be prepared for the sudden spike of inclement weather that happens annually during this time of the year. Managing ice and snow can be challenging in extreme weather conditions. However, one group that remains equipped to tackle any winter event that covers its path is Redwood Landscape’s snow plow department.
With a team of more than 50 people, Redwood Landscape’s snow plow department works to offer peace of mind, and specializes in commercial snow removal using heavy-duty snow plows, salt spreaders, skid steers, loaders, dump trucks, de-icing machines, and snow melters. Redwood Landscape additionally currently manages snow removal for Four Winds Casino, Walmart, Strack & Van Til, Centennial Village in Munster, and is more than ready to take on more large-scale commercial properties this upcoming winter season.
Todd Zandstra, president of Redwood Landscape, describes the varying responsibilities that the team must satisfy every winter.
“We have a lot of contributors that each have different roles for our snow and ice management team,” Zandstra said. “We do work with salting, snow plowing, machine work and some work necessary around the office.”
Zandstra describes how the preparation for the snow plow department during the winter season marks a unique time of the year for Redwood Landscape.
“Our landscaping season can often run until it gets really cold,” Zandstra said. “If we get some early snows, we have to quickly throw on our salt spreaders and snow plows. The next day, we would need to quickly pull everything off and continue landscaping until our season ends. Then we have to hook everything back up to go through it all. It’s a lot of work, but we’re always making sure to stay on top of everything for the snow.”
Zandstra also notes the importance of the snow plow department to not only focus on maintaining safety but also allowing people the ease to enter and leave their lots on heavy snow days.
Additionally, there has been discussion for Redwood Landscape to embark in new areas during the winter season.
“We would like to focus more on the commercial side of things,” Zandstra said. “We’re trying to get out of these tighter areas. Our equipment is able to handle larger areas and we want to set ourselves up to cater to them better. Along with what we do in preparation, we need to go through all of our machines and stage them in our parking lots as well.”
The snow plow department for Redwood Landscape is also backed by real-time weather insights. Earlier this year, the business partnered up with trueWeather to provide convenient updates.
“Not only has this helped us with monitoring weather but also pavement temperatures,” Zandstra said. “If we saw that the pavement temperature was 40 degrees when the snow comes in, then it’s all going to melt on impact. If it was 30 degrees, then we know that it’s going to stick. It’s nice to have those updates to be aware of when to deploy our snow plows and salt spreaders.”
Zandstra has been very pleased with the snow plow department’s consistent work ethic to help ensure a safe environment throughout the Region.
“I appreciate the eagerness of our whole team to make it happen,” Zandstra said. “We’re always willing to jump in and help others out. If there’s help needed in other areas, we say on top of everything.”
