What is your Legacy? PTSC Weekly Update

2014-ptscc-what-is-your-legacyLast week I had the opportunity to attend the dinner for the 2014 BGHS Academic Hall of Fame. It was a wonderful celebration of students who have worked hard and achieved top honors at BGHS and each student also honored a teacher that has made a difference in their lives.

Dr. James Comer says, "No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship." I know it's true for me--that teachers impacted my life and inspired me to tackle great challenges. It was awesome to sit and listen to these students talk about the difference their teachers have made in their lives. In the words of the students, they stated that these teachers had prepared them for the future, shaped who they are today, learned more from them than any book can provide, that his class was the reason they wanted to go to school, influenced my character, believed in my when others didn't, taught me valuable lessons, told me I could do anything I have my mind set on, teach you like you're a person, that they aspire to be that caring, and that small amounts of human kindness can make a difference in a person's life.

How awesome for these students to identify why the teacher they had chosen had made a difference in their lives and to share it with them.

We each have that opportunity every day. I challenged the students to take what they had learned from these great teachers and not just keep it for themselves, but to be that type of person to those around them. If we all take those lessons learned by these students from their teachers and share them in our own lives our community and world would start to look like a better place--and that's pretty exciting!
