The Chesterton Writing Group is a new adult writing group, sponsored by Westchester Public Library, that will meet two times each month in the Bertha Wood meeting room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. The first session will be on July 24, from 6-8 pm. No registration is necessary.

The Chesterton Writing Group is open to adult writers – fiction or non-fiction - of all levels, whether published or unpublished. Attendees will share their work, learn more about publishing, and find support and inspiration from fellow writers.

Summer Excursions to Find Curious George, Week 3
Curious George is taking a culinary journey around Westchester Township this summer! Follow the weekly clues given at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, or Hageman Library, 100 Francis Street, Porter, to find George at different restaurants in Chesterton and Porter. George may be found each week during Westchester Public Library’s summer reading program for children, Neighbors of the World.

The third week hunt for Curious George will be June 30-July 6. The clue? George is curious about fajitas y carnitas this week in Porter on Lincoln Street.

When you find George, take a picture with him and email it to heather@wpl.lib.in.us for Thomas Library and suzanne@wpl.lib.in.us for Hageman Library. Pictures will be posted on bulletin boards at the libraries to which they are submitted. Each child photographed will also be given an additional entry slip for the Summer Excursion grand prize: a Lego digital camera! Be sure to include the name and phone number of each child pictured so entry slips may be filled out.

Lego Club at Thomas Library
Westchester Public Library’s continuing Lego Club will meet Friday, July 18, at 6:30 pm. Clubbers meet in the Children’s Department at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. Attendance is free of charge. Registration is necessary. Children ages six years and up are welcome to sign up in the Children’s Department.

Children will get a bucket of Legos and may build something from their own imaginations.

Adult Elephant Sanctuary Program at Thomas Library
Adults are invited to grab their safari hats and binoculars and join their neighbors for an around-the world armchair journey sponsored by Westchester Public Library. The Adult Elephant Sanctuary Program will take place in the Bertha Wood meeting room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, on Friday, July 11, from 6:30-8 pm. Registration is necessary and is underway. Please register by July 7. Call or visit the Reference desk to register.

Join Pam Witt, former zoo docent, as she gives an overview about the largest elephant sanctuary in the United States and its mission. She’ll also share stories about the sanctuary’s gentle giants.

Gain fascinating insight into the world of pachyderms on this exciting adventure to the savannahs of Africa, the forests of India, and the lush green fields of Tennessee.

The program will begin at 6:30 pm with light refreshments inspired by Indian and African cuisine made by BJ from Molly Bea’s Ingredients.

5 One-Act Plays at the Library Service Center
Westchester Public Library will sponsor Five Short Plays on Wednesday, July 9, from 6-7:30 pm at the Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. Attendance is free of charge and open to the public courtesy of The Rivers Institute at Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana.

The one-act plays were written and will be directed and presented by students from the Institute, including Chesterton native Dakota McCoy. Enjoy “Ghost Light” by Chyna Cheaney, “The Everything Store” by Kayla Snabl, “Rex Stout Rings Again” by James Wylder, “Waiting for the Universe” by Korby Reed, and “Crosier in Arcadia” (excerpt) by Tom Evans.

Gabe’s World at Thomas Library
Summer in Gabe’s World will continue at Westchester Public Library on Wednesday, July 16 with separate sessions for adults and young adults. Gabe’s World, a unique crafting program, will take place in the Bertha Wood meeting room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. Registration for both sessions is necessary and will begin July 2. Call or visit the Reference desk to register.

Parachute cord bracelets are all the rage right now. Join Gabe Underwood and make your own parachute cord bracelet in varied colors. Young adults are invited to join Gabe from 3:30-5 pm; adults are invited to the 6-8 pm session. Materials will be provided by the library.

Library to Close in observance of Independence Day
Both branches of Westchester Public Library, the Westchester Township History Museum and the Library Service Center will be closed in observance of Independence Day, Friday, July 4. Library buildings will reopen Saturday, July 5, and resume regular hours. The office of the Westchester Township Trustee will also be closed in observance of Independence Day.

Because the library is closed on July 4, there will be no concert or film that evening.

Thomas Library, located at 200 W. Indiana Ave., is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Hageman Library, located at 100 Francis St., Porter, is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 1-5 p.m., and is closed on Sunday. The Westchester Township History Museum, housed in the Brown Mansion at 700 W. Porter Ave, is open Wednesday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The Library Service Center, located at 100 W. Indiana Ave., is open as needed for meetings.
