Area knitters are invited to gather in the Brown Mansion parlor for a cozy afternoon of knitting, conversation, and refreshments on Sunday, March 1, from 1-5 pm for Knitting Together. The program is free of charge and open to the public. Those who crochet or do needlework are also welcome to attend.

The Westchester Township History Museum, a cultural and educational service of Westchester Public Library, is housed in the Brown Mansion at 700 W. Porter Ave., Chesterton. The museum is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 1-5 pm. Groups may make reservations for tours by calling the museum at 983-9715.

Battles of the American Civil War
Battles of the American Civil War will continue at Westchester Public Library with a look at the Battle of Antietam. Join Thomas Murphy in the Bertha Wood room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, February 25, with a repeat presentation on Saturday, February 28, from 10 am-noon. There is no registration required; attendance is free of charge.

In September 1862, Robert E. Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia into Maryland. George B. McClellan, commanding the Army of the Potomac, was tasked with stopping the Confederates. On September 17, 1862 the two armies clashed on the banks of Antietam Creek. The result was the bloodiest single day in U.S. history. This battle may have changed the course of the war. The presentation will cover the events leading up to the battle.

Battles of the American Civil War will continue with a look at the Battle of Fredericksburg on March 25 and 28.

History buff and Civil War enthusiast Thomas Murphy will present each program. Murphy is an RSVP volunteer and has presented a number of programs at the library.

Read Across America at Thomas Library/Celebrate Dr. Seuss
Libraries all over America will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on Monday, March 2 during the National Education Association’s Read Across America. Join the celebration at Westchester Public Library! Come to the Children’s Department at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, from 3-4 pm.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go is this year’s theme. Enjoy a story time with the Cat in the Hat – and then follow him on his journey all around the library, collecting puzzle pieces as you go. Play Dr. Seuss games and more. Don’t miss the fun!

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness movement asking every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss (Dr. Theodor Geisel). Grab your Hat and Read with the Cat!

Friday Night Movie at Library Service Center: Big Hero 6
Westchester Public Library will host Friday Night at the Movies on Friday, February 27, at 6:30 pm. Families are invited to view Big Hero 6 at the Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. No registration is necessary. Library films are free of charge and open to the public.

Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the middle of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon, and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

Big Hero 6 is rated PG and has a running time of 102 minutes.

Intro to Minecraft Class at Thomas Library
Bits and Bytes will continue at Westchester Public Library with Intro to Minecraft. Intro to Minecraft will take place in the computer classroom located in the Serials/Automation Department on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, on Monday, March 9, from 1-3 pm. The class will be repeated on Tuesday, March 10, from 6-8 pm. Registration for both classes will begin February 23.

Minecraft is an open-world game in which players decide what to do and how to do it by collecting materials from the world around them in order to craft items and then building whatever their minds can imagine. Playing Minecraft may expand the creativity and critical thinking skills of gamers as well as helping with focus, organization, planning, and time management.

Introduction to Web Design Class at Thomas Library
Bits and Bytes will continue at Westchester Public Library with an Intro to Web Design class. Intro to Web Design will take place in the computer classroom located in the Serials/Automation Department on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton. The same class will be offered twice. An afternoon class will be held on Monday, March 2, from 1-3 pm and an evening class will be offered on Tuesday, March 3, from 6-8 pm. Classes are free but registration is necessary and underway.

In this class, attendees will learn the basics of creating a web page, starting with HTML and moving up to CSS. Even if you do not know the difference between Hypertext and Hyperlink, or think CSS stands for Cups Stack Swiftly, there will be something to lean about how all websites get the look they have.

Oscar Afternoon at Thomas Library
Gear up for the Oscars at Westchester Public Library. Come to the Bertha Wood meeting room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, on Friday, February 20, at 2 pm. No registration is necessary. At Oscar Afternoon enjoy viewing the 16th Oscar Award winner, Casablanca, voted Best Picture in 1943. Attendees will vote to predict this year’s Best Picture winner. Refreshments will be served.

Now in its 87th year, The Oscars is an annual American awards ceremony that honors cinematic achievements in the film industry. The various category winners are awarded a copy of Oscar, the statuette that is officially the Academy Award of Merit.
