Westchester Public Library Briefs: December 3, 2014

The Westchester Township History Museum will celebrate the holiday with its annual Christmas party, once again with a Victorian theme. The public is invited to join the festivities which will take place between 1:15-5 pm on Saturday, December 13, at the museum, located in the Brown Mansion at 700 W. Porter Avenue, Chesterton. Admission is free and no reservations are necessary. Light refreshments will be served.

Stop in to see the house decked out for the holidays. Come between1:15 and 2 pm to make Victorian-style ornaments. At 2 pm, join the old-fashioned Christmas carol sing-along to the music of the antique Hillstrom parlor organ, made in Chesterton in the early 1890’s. Join Rory McMahan in the parlor at 3 pm for a reading of a classic Christmas story.

Refreshments will include treats introduced during the 1970s and 1980s, to highlight the must-see Christmas exhibit, Gen Xmas: Toys and Gifts of the 70s and 80s.

In celebration of the Christmas holiday, all items in the museum store will be sold at a 10% discount. Chesterton panoramic photographs, 2015 historic calendars, books, ornaments, stocking stuffers and so much more will be available to help round out your gift giving. The sale will run December 6-21.

The museum, an educational and cultural service of Westchester Public Library, is open to the public free of charge Wednesday through Sunday from 1-5 pm, or by appointment. For more information, call the museum at 983-9715.

Library Film Series to show Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Come to Westchester Public Library to enjoy Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on Saturday, December 13, at 5 pm. Meet at the Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. No registration is necessary; attendance is free of charge.

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a growing nation of genetically “evolved” apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Enjoy munching popcorn while watching the movie.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, rated PG-13, has a running time of 130 minutes. Copies of the DVD will be available for checkout at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, and Hageman Library, 100 Francis Street, Porter, after the screening.

Get Ready for Santa at Hageman Library
The holiday season is here and there is so much to do! Children age 2-6 years of age and a parent/caregiver are invited to Westchester Public Library’s Porter branch for Getting Ready for Santa! Come to Hageman Library, 200 W. Porter Avenue, Chesterton, on Monday, December 15, from 10 am-noon. No registration is required for this free program.

Join the fun and play games and sing songs of the season. Have you ever made reindeer pops? Learn how, and make a snowman too. Rudolph and the other reindeer will probably be hungry on that special night, so you’ll make reindeer food for them…and be surprised how tasty it is!
