Led by a second place finish in Science and two 3rd place finishes in Mathematics and Social Studies, Washington Township Middle School Team Black defeated second place Ben Franklin Team Green 78-77 to win the 17th Annual Washington Township Middle School Academic Invitational presented by Blythe's Athletics on Saturday, April 9. Schools that participated in the WTMS Academic Invitational were Boone Grove Middle School, Ben Franklin Middle School, Hanover Central Middle School, River Forest Middle School and Union Township Middle School. “Canada, Our Neighbors To The North” was the theme for this year’s academic competitions.
All of the middle schools participating in the WTMS Academic Invitational will compete in the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) Academic Super Bowl-Jr. Division state competition on Saturday, April 30. Hanover Central (Class 2) and River Forest (Class 3) will compete at Pierce Middle School in Merrillville while Boone Grove (Class 3), Ben Franklin (Class 1), Union Township (Class 3) and Washington Township (Class 4) will compete at LaPorte High School hosted by LaPorte Middle School.
Subject Winners
Union Township Team Orange won the English competition by defeating second place Ben Franklin Team White 21-19. Team members include: Christian Cutka (captain), Allie Bushey, Maximillian Claussen, Jude Richardson, Izabela Schumacher
Ben Franklin Team White won the Mathematics competition by defeating second place Hanover Central Team Blue 16-13. Team members include: Sophie Ho (captain), Conner Donahue, Iris Schemel, Karina Trivedi
Washington Township Team Red won the Science competition by defeating Washington Township Team Black 22-21. Team members include: Addison Peres (captain), Elle Seifert, and Noah Satterblom.
Hanover Central Team Red won the Social Studies competition on the first tie breaker by defeating Ben Franklin Team Yellow with 12 points each. Team members include: Tyler Burrough (captain), Melissa Garcia, and Ava Santner.
Ben Franklin Team Green won the Interdisciplinary competition by defeating Ben Franklin Team White 17-16. Team members include: Glori Liu (captain), Amber Johnson, Karina Trivedi, Wesley Unzicker
