Visclosky Announces Grant Award for City of Hammond Fire Department

Washington, DC - Congressman Visclosky announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a grant to the City of Hammond Fire Department under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The $88,811 grant award will be used to purchase thermal imaging cameras.  According to the Hammond Fire Department, these types of cameras provide firefighters with the ability to see through blinding smoke and will greatly enhance their ability to conduct operations, including locating the fire, assisting and removing victims, and seeing structural hazards.

Congressman Pete Visclosky stated, “I congratulate the City of Hammond Fire Department for successfully identifying and obtaining this federal resource.  I am grateful for the invaluable service that Hammond firefighters provide at a moment’s notice to everyone in times of great need, and I am pleased that this grant will further keep them safe and improve their ability to protect the Hammond community.”

City of Hammond Fire Department Chief Jeffery C. Smith stated, “This grant will provide our firefighters with enhanced tools to properly and effectively complete their missions.  Our firefighters are our most valuable asset, and this funding will take a great step forward toward protecting them and decreasing their exposure to potential risks.”
