Veteran Spotlight: Troy Turner

Veteran Troy Turner established Right at Home Northwest Indiana, an in-home care service in Merrillville that offers support and assistance for the elderly, infirmed, and ill—including specialized care such as bathing, grooming, mobility support, medication reminders, companionship, advocacy support, and more for veterans in need.

A veteran himself, Troy Turner has a very specific connection to these clients. He’s been able to apply his background in the Navy to anticipate the needs of the veterans Right at Home Northwest Indiana serves.

“There are lots of services that are available to veterans,” he said. “One of the first things we did in the business was submit our application to our local Veteran Affairs to be able to take care of veterans. We’ve been providing home care to veterans and their spouses ever since. We also help them understand the benefits that may be available to them and navigate the steps to connect with the local VA to see if they qualify for the benefits they need.”

Veterans make up a significant portion of the local Right at Home’s client base.

“We spend a lot of time with all types of people, but we especially try to help veterans and their spouses understand these benefits. We want to help them through that process and provide care many times in the long run,” Troy said.

Troy’s wife, Sandra Turner, and son, William Turner, both work closely with him to care for all clients. All three wear several hats overseeing the business’ many operations.

“My wife pretty much helps out with the operations,” Troy said. “I spend a lot of time on growth strategies and William spends a lot of time in care coordination and working with clients and families, but to be honest, all three of us wear multiple hats throughout the day.”

Troy often leans on his experience in the Navy to navigate this dynamic as well.

“In the military, I learned when you're in charge, you’re responsible for everything that happens and doesn't happen,” he said. “As a family, we cover each other and make sure that we cover all of our bases, so our roles can change quite a bit.”

In their work, the family is able to make plenty of connections with their clients. William once worked with a client who required care to do basic everyday things. To this day, the client remains a friend of the family.

“She’s invited me out to coffee sometimes because of the relationship that we've built,” William said.

This relationship building extends to their veteran clients as well.

“The minute Troy walks into a veteran’s home and they look each other eye to eye, they are definitely on the same playing field,” Sandra said. “They understand that he is a veteran, and they know that he understands them.”

The trust that Troy has built with his clients and, in a particular way, his veteran clients, has been beneficial in other aspects of their lives.

“Knowing that he's built that kind of relationship with people and they see him as an upfront, honest person that they can trust, and the fact that they will involve him in all aspects of their care, it’s really something else,” Sandra said.

For Troy Turner, working alongside his family and immersed in such life-changing efforts is not something he takes for granted.

“I've worked for a long time in business without my family. This has been a personal passion to be able to get in a business that has an impact on others in our community, but also work with my family at the same time,” Troy said.

Right at Home Northwest Indiana is about creating relationships that are key across the company’s stakeholder groups. The family relationships that built the business serve as a strong foundation for the company, and the relationship the Turner family has with their clients is a key component to its success. When it comes to the bond between Troy Turner and his veteran clients, it provides these clients with a heightened sense of security and an even stronger confidence in care.
