On Saturday, February 13, 2016, an enthusiastic crew of over 50 community volunteers loaded a semitrailer truck with some 2000 cases of water bound for the residents of Flint, Michigan.
Those volunteers included members of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte community organizations, religious and socially based groups as well as board members and staff of the Urban League who came together to support the needs of the beleaguered community of Flint.
It was a beautiful sight to see young and older, Black, white, and Hispanic people working together at such an important event.
We want to thank all those who spent three hours loading the water which had been donated from sources all over the Northwest Indiana Region including from churches, social groups and individuals. The water was delivered to the Flint Housing Commission; we are told the water will be very much appreciated.
The public should know that the Urban League stands ready to assist wherever we can, particularly when a crisis of this magnitude occurs. But we are all looking forward to a speedy resolution of the toxic water problem which we know will require massive state and federal resources. The whole nation is waiting for all elected officials in Michigan and in Congress to do the right thing by restoring clean and healthy water through a new distribution system to the people of Flint.
