City-of-GaryMayor Freeman-Wilson joins INDOT to unveil historic marker at 5th Avenue and Broadway

The City of Gary and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are teaming up to commemorate the city’s historic streetcar rail line with the unveiling of a historic marker on Friday, September 20th at 3 p.m. (CT) on the corner of 5th Avenue and Broadway, on the very thoroughfare where streetcars used to travel during the first half of the 20th Century. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and INDOT officials will unveil the marker and comment on the significance of the rail line. Members of the media are encouraged to attend.

The marker will feature an authentic photograph of streetcars rumbling down the bustling intersection of 5th Avenue and Broadway, circa 1913, and a brief history of the rail line, which first began operation in 1908.
