United Way of La Porte County to host “Bison-tennial” Public Art Project

Bison-Tennial-Public-Art-Project-2016-01United Way of LaPorte County is excited to facilitate the "Bison-tennial" Public Art Project in partnership with the LaPorte County Indiana Bicentennial Committee. This is an officially endorsed legacy project aimed to celebrate Indiana's rich and diverse history and unique features.

What better way to celebrate the state's 200th birthday than with a Public Art Project. A call went out for LaPorte County artists’ to decorate a 5-foot-tall fiberglass bison for public display throughout County. Sierra Mullican from LaPorte and a student of art at Indiana University in South Bend will decorate the LaPorte County Bison. The State’s goal is that at least one - if not a herd - of bison will be on display in each of Indiana's 92 counties.

Bison-Tennial-Public-Art-Project-2016-02The bison has been delivered to the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau office where it will be decorated. It is expected to be complete by the end of February and will make appearances in our local communities throughout the spring and summer. This public art piece will also be highlighted along the Bicentennial Torch Relay route running through our county on October 8th and culminating in Washington Park in Michigan City for a county-wide Indiana's Bicentennial celebration.

We at United Way of LaPorte County are honored to facilitate this legacy project for our county throughout the bicentennial year. Opportunities will abound for folks to come together to celebrate our own special role in the history of our state. LaPorte County has truly made its mark, not only on our state, but throughout the country with life-changing inventions, great people, and our beautiful lakes and countryside. We have so much to be proud of – let the fun begin!
