United Way Announces Emergency Food And Shelter Grant Opportunity

united-way-laporte-countyThe LaPorte County FEMA Board in partnership with United Way of LaPorte County has announced that March 16, 2015 is the deadline for county agencies to submit an application for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds. Approved applicants (who will be notified by email) will be required to attend a mandatory meeting at United Way on March 17th from 10am – noon. To qualify, agencies must also:

Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government; Have an accounting system; Practice non-discrimination; Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; If they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

This program was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter. $57,235 dollars are available for LaPorte County.

Program funds are used to provide the following, as determined by the Local Board in funded jurisdictions:

Food, in the form of served meals or groceries. Lodging in a mass shelter or hotel. One month's rent or mortgage payment. One month's utility bill. Equipment necessary to feed or shelter people, up to a $300 limit per item.
