Being surrounded by nature can often be healing— mentally, spiritually, and physically. When Community Healthcare System planned their new Stroke and Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point, they knew that a healing garden would be important to help facilitate holistic healing within their patients. Upon the passing of Valori Kolarczyk, long-time inpatient program director for Acute Rehabilitation at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, coworkers and her husband Larry helped to establish the garden as a way to honor Valori’s memory and work.
On October 16, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago partnered with the founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes to unveil and bless a device that enables mothers in crisis to anonymously surrender their babies into the arms of medical professionals to help ensure the child’s well-being and safety.
Franciscan Health Crown Point NICU Nurses start Graduation Program
Franciscan Health Crown Point is the proud alma mater to some of Northwest Indiana’s most distinguished graduates, the NICU babies who work tirelessly to go home with their parents. Three of Franciscan’s nurses, Patti Pirkle, Kim Federico, and Beth Wanicki, got together to create the NICU Graduation program to celebrate the effort of these babies and their families.
100+ supporters raise breast cancer awareness at Methodist Hospital’s annual ‘It’s a Pink Party’
For the last seven years, Methodist Hospitals has put together their signature ‘It’s a Pink Party’ event to raise awareness and educate the public about breast cancer. This year, over 100 men and women were in attendance as the hospital offered chair massages, hand massages, Mary Kay lip care, and a number of different educational resources such as breast self-exams, genetic testing, mammograms, and general cancer research.
Simulation is quickly becoming one of the key attributes of today’s nursing programs. Simulation labs allow students to gain hands-on experience without the stress of working with a real patient. The University of Saint Francis (USF) Crown Point knows there’s no better way for students to learn and practice skills so when faced with certain real life patient situations, they’re calm, cool, and collected.
Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals hosting annual Pink Party
The Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals is dedicated to making sure women feel their best and most comfortable in their establishment. The Center is hosting its annual Pink Party, an event that is held in October which is breast cancer awareness month and encourages women to step out of the box and visit the Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center.

UnitedHealthcare, the American Lung Association, and residents of Northwest Indiana are literally stepping up to raise funds for research, education, and patient programs at the Fight for Air Climb in Chicago on March 10.
