The Ultimate Glamping Package: Philanthropy Meets Luxury in the Great Outdoors

Dunes-Learning-Canter-GlampingIn an unlikely pairing, a high-style interior designer and dirt-loving outdoor education center have teamed up to raise money to send deserving kids to camp. Together, they have assembled “The Ultimate Glamping Package.”

Designed by Robert Northington Interiors for the nonprofit Dunes Learning Center, this “glamorous camping” suite features a nine person Wenzel Grandview tent (which sleeps two “very comfortably”) and a hand-picked collection of luxury outdoor furnishings. Proceeds from its sale will benefit kids in underserved communities.

A Chicago native, Northington says that childhood experiences in nature inspired his creativity. “It is so important, especially for kids growing up in urban areas like Gary or Chicago, to develop a personal connection to the outdoors,” he says. “When Sandi described the project to me, I immediately saw its potential.”

Sandi, is Sandi Weindling, Director of Marketing and Development at Dunes Learning Center. “I just love Robert’s sense of style and his willingness to take risks,” she says. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to collaborate with him again, and I knew this was it!”

Weindling and Northington worked together while assembling a feature for Lake Magazine (which ceased publication in 2008). They both say that they were inspired by the challenge of creating a luxury environment that is both rugged and practical.

In addition to the roomy Grandview tent, the package includes two lanterns—one with a USB charger and solar option; a cozy “tandem" sleeping bag in a stylish medium-gray; two folding side tables—one conveniently converts to a tray; a cherry-red portable propane grill; a pair of stainless steel martini glasses and a copy of Martinis & Marshmallows, a Guide to Luxury Camping.

The winning bidder will also receive a consultation and $150 gift certificate with which to customize their package, courtesy of Robert Northington Interiors, located in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Photos of their creation can be viewed on Ebay (search for “The Ultimate Glamping Package”) or on Dunes Learning Center’s website at duneslearningcenter.org. Weindling and Northington are hoping to raise $1850 from the sale of the package, but encourage potential “glampers” to make their best offer. The winner will be announced at the organization’s annual fundraising and awards dinner on September 13, 2014.
