The season of giving at Harley-Davidson of Michigan City

The season of giving at Harley-Davidson of Michigan City

At Harley-Davidson of Michigan City, giving back is part of who they are year-round, but especially during the holiday season.

In the past, Harley-Davidson of Michigan City has been active in its surrounding community, supporting it in as many ways possible. Harley, its customers, and staff have donated canned goods to Good Shepherd Food Pantry in La Porte, heavily promoted and supported Toys for Tots, and have donated to La Porte County Animal Shelter, Lakeshore Paws, and Best Buddies Pet Pantry.

“We have wonderful, caring customers, and we know that they love to help as much as we do. We also feel that, as a local business, it’s important to help our community of less fortunate people and pets,” said Katlyn Slater, Office and Finance Manager at Harley-Davidson of Michigan City.

One of the location’s main fundraisers—the Annual Blue Ball Run and Chili Cook Off—is a community staple that gets better every year. After all fundraising from the event was finished, Harley-Davidson of Michigan City was able to spend hundreds of dollars on toys for their annual Toys for Tots drive and put together a heaping toy bin for children this holiday season. On top of this, the store was able to split the money raised by customers who attended the event to buy canned goods and some dog/animal supplies for the local shelter.

Slater and the entire Harley-Davidson of Michigan City team are proud of the work they have done to support the community.

“I am very happy to be a part of an organization that cares about others. Our dealership has a lot of caring people working here, and we like to do whatever we can to help others. I feel a successful business is a business that looks at the big picture and knows that giving back is just as important as making money,” Slater said.

The Harley-Davidson of Michigan City dealership has been in business for 20 years, and since it first opened its doors, the staff and family have made it a priority to be charitable.  Some of their staple events such as the Toys for Tots motorcycle run and the chili cook-off have set a perfect example of the kind of business that Harley wants to be. But they also contribute to other organizations, including Guardian Riders, ABATE of Indiana, and many benefit rides and raffle items for individuals all year long.

“I think it is important to give back, being a local business that has been in the same community for 20 years and serves as a go-to or staple place to shop, visit, and buy,” Slater said. “The Harley-Davidson Shop of Michigan City has the best team. We all come to each other with ideas on how we can help our community and then work out the details to make it happen,” Slater said.
