The Northwest Indiana Symphony announces auditions for youth orchestra and chorus

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Philip Bauman, offers a select group of young musicians a dynamic and educational musical environment, which places a strong emphasis on artistic excellence, personal growth and providing exceptional performance experiences.  This outstanding youth orchestra is comprised of students from Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper and La Porte counties in Indiana and Cook County in Illinois. The Youth Orchestra is excited to present several performances this year including two concerts and their own Showcase Fundraiser in March. The Youth Orchestra season begins with regular Sunday rehearsals on September 8, 2019.

The Youth Orchestra is open to highly accomplished musicians between 8th and 12th grades and post-high school students who are currently under the age of 22.  Membership in the Youth Orchestra is by audition only.

The Youth Orchestra announces Fall Auditions for the 2019-2020 Season for all instruments, especially Trumpet, Oboe & Bass.  Auditions will take place on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 from 2:00 – 7:00pm at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster.

For complete information regarding audition requirements, application forms, required music selections, and to schedule an audition, please visit the Youth Orchestra link of the Symphony website at: www.nisorchestra.org.  Please contact Emily Smith, Youth Orchestra Manager, at yo@nisorchestra.org or (219)836-0525 x 201 with additional questions.

We are pleased to offer our students many other great musical opportunities in addition to our major concerts. This year the Youth Orchestra will:

  • Have the opportunity to meet with several college students, professors and representatives. Students can explore options and ask direct questions about majoring in music and music education vs. participating in music classes while pursuing an alternate major.
  • Continue our extensive chamber music program which includes two string quartets, woodwind quintet, brass quintet, and jazz ensemble. Groups can be seen performing regularly before Symphony concerts and throughout the community.
  • Receive sectional coaching from members of the Northwest Indiana Symphony and other professional musicians from Northwest Indiana.

Auditions for the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus’ 2019-2020 concert season will take place on Friday, August 9 and Sunday, August 18 from 2 – 8pm at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, Indiana.

Previous choral experience is recommended. Vocal range, aural abilities, rhythmic comprehension and sight reading will be tested; no prepared vocal selection is required.

The 120-voice volunteer chorus, under the direction of Dr. Nancy Menk, performs regularly with both the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonic Orchestra. Weekly rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings, 7:30-10:00 p.m., at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts.

Repertoire for the coming season includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Orff's Carmina Burana, Bernstein's West Side Story, Bacalov's Misa Tango, as well as the annual Holiday Pops.

Call the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra office at (219) 836-0525 x200 to set up an audition.
