Take Stock of Your Stuff with the Post Holiday Purge

Clutter is overwhelming. It takes time, effort and a little planning to keep your place in order without feeling like stuff is closing in around you. After the holidays can be especially daunting considering how much can accumulate after such a short period of time. It’s a good time of year to take stock of what you were given and what you can donate, or throw away. We’ll help you cut through the clutter, and start the new year with fresh closets, drawers and mindset.

Start with the Decor

First, tackle those Christmas and holiday decorations. It’s a good time of year to go through all of them and keep what you love, and pitch what you don’t. If you don’t love it, it’s just clutter and doesn’t deserve a place in your beautiful home anyways.

Closet Clean Out

Start with your most overfilled closet. Take your time and be harsh and realistic while sorting into the “keep”, “donate” and “sell” piles. If you haven’t seen it in a couple of years and forgot it was even in there, you probably don’t need it and won’t use it.

Clothing closets can be tricky. There can be a lot of memories attached to clothing and sizes can be an issue since many people fluctuate in weight frequently. For some people, it’s easiest to judge based on how they want to project themselves in the coming year. Does your more professional wardrobe suit you? Do you have too many casual pieces? Too many of one category like pants or long sleeve shirts? For others, it works to assess what wasn’t worn at all in the previous year and if you didn’t touch it or just passed it over every time you thought about it, chuck it. Scale down in whatever way works for you, be ruthless, and don’t hold onto things that don’t serve you and you don’t wear.

Too Many Toys

If you have kids, you have a toy problem. Tiny toys, big toys, toys that come alive at night. It's likely that the kids got some shiny new toys to play with from Santa this year and it's also likely that there are quite a few toys ready to be donated to a child younger than them who will love it as much as your child once did.

This is a parenting minefield but fear not! You can have a heart-to-heart with your child about their things and how giving them away can help another child. You can take them to volunteer with you at the donation center so they can see first-hand how their things may benefit another child.

Operation Junk Drawer

We all have them, it’s not a big deal. Most of us have them near the entry point of the house or in the kitchen. It’s always nice to clear out old menus, little odds, and ends that never seem to get used and rewrap the useful twine that somehow got unwound throughout the year. Some people enjoy buying little organizers for their junk drawers to keep them tidy, others just try to clean it out and start fresh with a somewhat empty and organized drawer.
