The Environmental Club at St. Mary Community Catholic School, in Crown Point, has been helping keep the community clean for the past few years, but now they have taken it one step further. The club adopted highway, U.S. 231, in order to help keep that small section of the earth clean as well. The environmental club held its first meeting of the new school year on Wednesday, September 4th, and decided to take a field trip to US 231 to clean up any trash they found on the sidewalk and grass. Students were extremely determined to pick up all the pieces of trash because “Keeping God’s creation clean would make him proud,'' said student Benjamin Martino. The ‘adopt a highway’ sign can be seen while driving west on U.S. 231 and the students were so excited about it, they even took a group photo underneath it. Students are hopeful that having this sign will remind people to recycle and to keep our beautiful Earth clean because as student Hailey Baehler said, “Our Earth is dying because we aren’t cleaning it.” St. Mary’s Environmental Club will carry forward their mission of keeping their school and our Earth as clean as possible, and they will continue to spread the word in the hopes that others will follow along. Their next field trip will be a fishing trip, but will soon be back to cleaning the neighborhood.
