All Hoosier students are taught Indiana History as part of their fourth-grade curriculum. Isabella Leurck, a fourth-grader at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point, took her learning one step further as she gathered ideas to answer the question, “What makes living in Indiana today so special?” The inspiration for her extra effort was to write an essay to submit for the annual Statehood Day Essay Contest administered by the Indiana Statehouse Tour Office and Indiana Center for the Book. This essay contest is open to all fourth-graders throughout the state of Indiana.
Isabella Leurck won fourth place in the contest! She will be honored on Statehood Day, December 11th, at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis where she will get to read her essay aloud as well as participate in educational activities. Isabella commented, “I am very excited that I won. It is an honor to go to Indianapolis to represent my school.”
