The students competed as teams of four and performed impressively. After nine grueling hours and six rounds of chess, the final results were announced. The chess team was ecstatic to receive a coveted top ten trophy in the 3rd grade and under division.

The 3rd and under A team consisting of John Mouser, Julian Wagner, James Raggs, and Joseph Mullally took home the 9th place trophy of more than fifty of the state’s finest teams who qualified for state. This achievement is the best chess team state finish in known school history. Not far behind them was the nearly identically talented 3rd grade and under B team who received 16th place. This team consisted of Rachel Mumaugh, Nathan Jamrosz, James Wong, and Jaxon Froglia. “All thirty-one wildcats performed very well and made St. Mary School very proud of their fortitude and perseverance,” said principal, Tom Ruiz. St. Mary’s chess team is led by Dr. Lisa Mullally.
